Conversations with Amy Treme

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amy Treme.

Hi Amy, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Amy Treme. I live in Shreveport Louisiana. With my spouse Nathan and 2 kiddos. I work as a fashion styling teacher at a career center. I have been swing in some way shape or form since I was 6 years old. I have seen for my myself, friends, family or my community since high school. People starting liking what I was making and it gave me the confidence to put myself out there. Through the years I got more involved with art markets which in turn led me to local fashion shows and networking. Which led me to the job I have today.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been pretty smooth because it’s mostly on my own time. It’s a side hustle. There have been bouts of block where I don’t touch a machine for months. But really sewing is what gets me through hard times.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am mostly know for my upcycling. I am proud of being accepted into the Fashion Prize in 2022. That was a fashion show here locally in Shreveport. I didn’t win but it was so fun. I really just feel proud when I see my work on other people randomly when I’m out and about. I get so giddy.

I am also really proud of my work as a teacher. Watching these high school kids come in with no knowledge of sewing and leave by the end of the semester with sometimes a 3 look collection. It’s overwhelming the pride I feel for them.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Don’t let seasons in life dictate the rest of your creative journey. It’s ok to take breaks and come back rejuvenated.
