Conversations with Angela Mercado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Mercado.

Hi Angela , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

I started sewing at the age of 7 because I loved creating things. I started by making clothing for my dolls for fun and once my family saw that I knew how to sew, they would ask me to fix their clothes or fix broken zippers, because of that, I learned how tailor clothes, which made me understand how clothes were really made. My parents then bought me my first sewing machine. I started making my own clothes out of curtains and extra fabric and with that experience, I started getting really good and then my family noticed and asked if I would be interested in making this my career to which I excitedly said yes, which is what Ive been doing since!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
So far it has been a smooth road, but, making a collection all from scratch has been a little challenging. Hours of drafting patterns and sewing takes a lot of discipline and work, but I love it and am not afraid of a little challenge.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a self taught fashion designer, I make all my garments by hand. I taught myself pattern making, hand sewing, how to sketch a piece and then how make it a wearable garment. I love fashion designing because to me it encompasses everything I love- art, sculpting, history, architecture, cinema, all in one art form. I am inspired by every aspect of life and of the world. Because of my travels, I get to experience different cultures, architecture and styles, which I incorporate in my work. I am most proud of my up and coming 15 look collection this August, which I have been working on since February of this year. I hand crafted all 15 looks in this collection. Each piece tells a different story through color, shape and texture.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Some of my favorite things about Dallas are its bustling underground concert and art scene. I do however wish there were more of a community of young artists and events for creators to showcase their work.
