Conversations with Artaska Strings

Today we’d like to introduce you to Artaska Strings

Hi Artaska, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
When I was four, I began playing the violin. Growing up in Milwaukee, WI, I auditioned for and joined the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra when I reached high school. By then, I knew I wanted to pursue a career with the violin. After college, my career took off, and I performed all across America, playing at numerous events. I’ve had several major successes, including a jazz radio hit called “Spontaneous” in 2020. In 2021, I performed at the Thanksgiving Day Halftime Show with Big Sean and have since had ten (and counting) top hits on Apple Music.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Growing up in Wisconsin as one of the only Black violinists, I faced many challenges. People often told me that someone like me couldn’t be successful at playing the violin or that I shouldn’t even try. I was also told that it was impossible to have a career as a violinist because I am Black. In college, I had professors who mocked my goals and dreams. It wasn’t an easy journey, and there were times I almost quit, but I persevered.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a violinist with my own shows. Please visit my website artaskastrings.com and sign up for my email list to stay updated on when I’ll be performing in your area. I also play at weddings and corporate events. I take pride in my unique style, blending classical music with hip hop and other genres. My performances are exciting, and I aim to ensure that everyone in the audience has a fantastic time.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I believe in taking risks. If you believe in what you do, you should pursue it. It may be risky, but it will be worth it.
