Conversations with Betsy Jones

Today we’d like to introduce you to Betsy Jones.

Hi Betsy, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
While traveling the world with a non-profit group, I fell in love with photography. I was inspired by the singers and dancers I was traveling with, entranced by their performances and being able to capture the tiny moments that you’d miss if you’d blinked during the moment. After finishing my time there, I went on to complete a Photography degree at The University of Texas at Arlington. Through school I started to establish my own freelance business, capturing athletes, families, and a variety of other subjects. Now, I continue to capture anything with a story to tell, hoping to show others the little things I see beneath the surface that I see behind my lens.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth at all, and at the same time has been a constant. It has always been a side gig, as I struggled to create a substantial income. I have tried out many different kinds of subjects, always looking to “niche” in the hopes that it would create some stability. However, nothing has truly ever been “the only thing” I want to photograph. Instead, I’ve found the common thread of “human” through every subject I’ve tried, including athletes, entrepreneurs, newborns, animals, businesses, families, individuals, events and everything in between. No matter the subject, my gift is in capturing the vulnerable truth.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I capture the part of people that they let sneak out when they’re not trying to put on a front. When they are not trying to “be something”…except themselves. The part that lets their guard down & feels real, intimate & inviting. My work with brands is especially important because of that. As a brand, you need to show your uniqueness. Putting on a front never works & only makes you blend in to the masses. When I work with brands I have an extensive questionnaire that helps me get to know the person behind the brand, the mission & vision, & then I put that into imagery.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Owning a photography business is risky! There’s no guarantee you’ll make money. It’s a true manifestation of “do what you love and the money will follow” and when I’m at my best, that’s what I’m chasing. I know this is my unique ability and although it can feel unstable and uncertain, that’s what I chase & trust…that’s the risk I take.
