Today we’d like to introduce you to Black Boy King.
Hi King, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
My name is The Black Boy King, and I’m a hip-hop artist here in Dallas. You can stream all of my music on all streaming platforms, such as Spotify, and follow me on Instagram at @blackboykingofficial. I’ve been producing and writing music for 10 years, and I run my own record label, Kingdom House Records. I grew up in Las Vegas, NV but call Texas my home, and I’ve loved every minute of living here. I struggled growing up like many and have overcome many things in my life, which gives me my perspective, which I love sharing through my music; whether it’s something difficult or having a good time, I’m open and honest, and I appreciate all my fans and people who’ve taken the time to listen to my music and support my movement.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Personally, growing up, we struggled financially and lived in the projects, hotels, and generally poor areas. But by the grace of God, I’ve been able to persevere and overcome many obstacles to be where I am now, and I appreciate each day I’m alive. I’ve had friends die and watched the path of others go in the wrong direction, so now it’s all about maximizing each moment I’m alive and trying to live each day to the fullest. We didn’t have much, but we had each other, so now my mission is to pay it forward to those I love and care about and establish a legacy I can pass down.
We grew up on EBT and sometimes was even homeless, so now I have a great appreciation for the blessings in my life. My mind and my focus is all on constant improvement and becoming the best person I can be. That’s what being a King is all about, and that’s what living a King life is all about. It’s not about bragging or boasting. It’s about self-respect and accountability. It’s about handling business the right way and living your life to the fullest without fear.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hip-hop artist and producer. I’ve written over 150 songs, and I’ve been releasing my own music the last few years and have had the great opportunity to have major artists like Sean Kingston, Rick Ross featured on songs. I also have work coming with Gucci Mane and Boosie Badazz coming very soon, which I’m really excited about. Kingdom House Records is an independent label, so we don’t have the backing of a major label. We just want to make great music have fun doing it, and make our contribution to the hip-hop genre. I rap about my life as well as my perspective and experiences. I’m so proud to have had a song chart on Spotify. My song ‘Eat It Up’ chart number 1 on Spotify in 2022 here in Texas. The next goal is to hit the iTunes charts and, one day Billboard.
I think what sets me apart is that my sound is different. My delivery is different. It’s no secret that rap has become a bit formulaic. Alot of artists sound the same. So, I aim to be different because I am different. I’m not like anyone you’ve ever met, and I convey that in my art.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Outside of creativity, my persistence, and my ability to learn. I am smart enough to know what I don’t know, so I like to engage with other artists and creatives to get ideas and learn from. I’m also coachable, so when I’m in the studio with people who’ve been where I want to go, I listen. I respect the genre and study it. I learn from the past, and I’m a big fan of hip-hop from all eras because they are so different and unique, and there is so much to grab from it.
My positivity helps too. I’ve been through so much, and if it wasn’t for my positivity, I’d be in a much darker place mentally. I am a big believer in God and Jesus. And that faith has led me to where I am now.
