Today we’d like to introduce you to Bonnie Phillips.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am a plant lover and I was looking for a way to get more space to have more plants so I looked up space saving ways to display your plants on Pinterest and discovered Kokedama and I researched it and taught myself how to do it and got better at it! One of my longtime friends, Skye Mcdaniel owns La bodega a grab and go chicken rotisserie in Oak Cliff and she had some shelves and she had some artisan friends that had their wares displayed there so I asked her if could display some of my Kokedama. She loved the aesthetics that they brought to her restaurant, and I began selling plants. It really caught on, and there were a lot of people that were really loving what I was doing, so I thought outside the box and looked up outdoor markets and I jumped in
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has definitely been a learning process. I learned about markets and finding them and figuring out which ones were lucrative and which ones were not. I developed a website, which every day a work in process. I have learned many new things about social media and staying relative. I also started teaching my craft to people who were interested in learning something new and fun. Every day I learn something new. Most of all, I’m grateful for all of the talented people that I’ve met over the past year. It’s a wonderful community where we all take care of each other and want to see each other grow and thrive.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have always worked in the service industry and working 55+ hours a week was just not cutting it for my family anymore. So, I decided to put my love of plants and growth into a business and bet on myself and really make this thing work so that I could be home more often. I love helping people bring nature into their homes in the form of plants and spread the knowledge that I have about plants and caring for them.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I love TannerThePlanter who owns Famous in Oregon. He always has such great information. Also, YouTube is one of my favorite go to places for gaining knowledge
