Conversations with Boris Lukman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Boris Lukman.

Hi Boris, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I began my career as an actor and dancer at the age of 17, joining Event Box – a multi-award-winning entertainment company that produces licensed shows based on popular cartoons such as DC’s Justice League, Tom & Jerry, and SpongeBob SquarePants. I was fortunate enough to be cast as the lead in a live theater adaptation of Aardman Studio’s Shaun The Sheep, which toured the Middle East in countries such as Egypt, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, performing in front of thousands of audience members.

While working for Event Box, I auditioned for acting schools in the UK and US and was accepted into the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. After graduating in 2020, I spent a year working in the US, booking projects in TV and film. I was even fortunate enough to play the lead role in a SAG feature film called Vortex: A Film Anthology, where I portrayed the iconic Nikola Tesla. This film is currently available on Amazon Prime Video and Tubi.

Upon returning home to Belgrade, Serbia, I signed with Slavic Artists Management – the leading talent agency in the country. Shortly after joining, I booked a role on the popular sci-fi TV series, The Ark, which is currently the highest streaming TV series on the Sy Fy Channel. Most recently, I worked on a horror feature film called Hell Hole, set to be released on Shutter next year.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Every project I worked on, whether it’s TV, film, commercial, or voice-over, always came with its own unique set of challenges and obstacles.

What I actually find the most challenging is not when I’m doing the job (which is the fun part), but when I’m waiting for the next opportunity to work. This isn’t a sort of nine-to-five kind of lifestyle and there’s a lot of waiting involved. So, what I try to do is make sure that I’m using the time at hand to stay in shape as an actor. Even after graduating from acting school, any actor worth their fault will continue to work on their craft until the day they retire and therefore I still go to acting classes to refine my skills and push myself to go deeper into the characters I play. When an opportunity arises where I can really showcase my abilities, I feel much more confident and at ease because I kept my acting muscles toned.

It’s the same approach a professional basketball player would have when preparing for the next match, making sure they keep shooting hoops every day on the court and working on their physical performance in the gym.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
The thing that I’m known for amongst my fellow actor friends and colleagues is that I’m a jack of all trades. I can cover a range of characters due to the various skills I have attained over the course of my career and training.

I’m a professional actor, but I’m also a dancer specializing in tap. I’m also a voice actor, and I can act in various accents and dialects. I do fight choreography, and I’ve been trained in martial arts such as judo, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, and muay thai. Most recently I’ve been training competitively with historical European weapons (HEMA), and I can fence with various swords like the longsword, rapier, saber, side sword, and small sword.

I really love to work on types of roles that require some kind of physical and/or vocal transformation. I was very lucky to be cast in an original musical theater show of the famous cartoon Tom & Jerry, called Tom & Jerry: The Crystal Quest. There I got to voice characters like Droopy the dog, Tin, Pan, and Dragon, who each had a different kind of vocal transformation and accent. I also played a character called Taja which represented the embodiment of the four elements: Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. I’m very lucky and proud of being a part of this show because I got a chance to apply my physical and vocal acting skills.

What do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is spending time with my wife Coral. Whatever I have going on in my life, whether it’s a good or bad day, if I spent my time with her then that day was by default a success. I’m very fortunate to be able to say this and truly mean it. She’s my biggest inspiration and my biggest supporter in life.
