Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney Yma.
Hi Brittney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started dog walking and pet sitting completely on a whim. I always knew I wanted to work with animals but didn’t know in what capacity. One day I answered a Craigslist ad for a company here in Dallas (that no longer exists). They were looking for pet sitters. I worked there for about 4 years- I had a blast. I went from being just a walker to a manager and learned the inner workings of the business side. I knew I eventually wanted to branch off and do my own thing- so I did just that at the beginning of 2020. It was definitely a scary time to start a new business but I found a few clients through Wag and Nextdoor. These clients started referring me to their friends and the rest is history. Five years later, I’m staying busy doing what I love.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say it’s not always a smooth road owning your own business. This goes for any field where you’re solely responsible for recruiting your own clientele. Sometimes it’s really busy- other times it’s really slow which in turn can cause a lot of stress. People move and situations change. I would say the biggest struggle is losing longtime clients I’ve really secured a bond with. I’ve had a handful of clients move to the suburbs or out of state and that is always a bittersweet thing. Not only do you get attached to the animals you care for but also the people.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full time dog walker and pet sitter. I have been doing this for close to 10 years. I provide dog walks and vacation drop ins (for dogs and cats). I’ve worked with a wide variety of breeds. I’m well versed in what equipment is the safest and most efficient for walks, handling reactive dogs, administering medication and just about any other random tidbits and information there is to know about owning and caring for dogs (and cats). What makes me unique is I’m very communicative- I believe in keeping my clients in the loop with cute pictures and updates after every visit. I want them to feel comfortable and know that their animals are being truly cared for. I’m incredibly reliable and upfront about my availability and ability to carry out a job. I pride myself in being able to establish a solid relationship/friendship with my clients and their fur babies.
How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
