Today we’d like to introduce you to Carlos Barron.
Hi Carlos, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Was raised during the heroin epidemic in the mid-to-late 1990s in Plano Tx, resulting in at least 19 deaths among young people between 1995 and 1999. The crisis gained national attention and challenged the perception of heroin as a problem confined to inner cities.
Ex gang member and ex drug addict/seller. Was in and out of jail from the age 16-21. At the age of 15 I joined a local boxing club in Allen Texas. I learned for a few years and decided to teach some local kids in my neighborhood how to defend themselves. At the age of 21 I decided to open up my own boxing gym and we named it Trinity Fight Club. In the past 14 years we have trained all level types. From bullied kids, to moms of domestic violence, up to UFC and pro boxers. I now own a boxing club and a soccer club where I help shape youth in my community through sports
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road. We have owned 2 different locations and lost both due to low income. We have worked with the Salvation Army in Plano and ended up at Destination Dallas for about 6 years. The road has been tough but I do not store my treasures here on earth. I know God has a plan for me and I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength to keep going.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I currently teach traditional style boxing at a personal level. We do a bunch of one on ones. I trained BJJ under Gracie for about 5 years so I specialize not only in traditional style boxing but also in self defense.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I like that there is a lot of youth in our city. A lot of youth wanting to better themselves but are in need of more role models. One thing that the city lacks are programs for community leaders like myself. We would love to partner with police and city officials to help reach the youth
