Conversations with Carol Riell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carol Riell.

Hi Carol, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After leaving my retail career to stay home with my kids, I found myself behind the camera, capturing my girls and then my friends’ families. What started as a hobby quickly grew into a business, and over the years it has evolved in ways I never imagined. From families to brands to interiors, I love the variety and creativity each session brings. I’ve also had the joy of photographing for The Scout Guide in four local city guides. This is such a highlight that allows me the chance to connect with so many inspiring businesses and creatives.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, it’s been such an amazing road. Growing my business has been one of the greatest joys. I’ve loved the challenge of building something that’s truly mine. Along the way, I’ve met so many wonderful families, business owners, and creatives who have trusted me to capture their stories, and those connections have made the journey so rewarding. Of course, like any business, there are ups and downs. For me, some months are slower and give me a chance to prepare for the future, and then there are the inevitable surprises (like when a piece of equipment fails…or when I drop a lens or two—yikes!). But even with the bumps, I can’t imagine doing anything else.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in family, brand, and interior photography, and I love the variety each brings. No matter who or what I’m photographing, my goal is always the same…to create genuine connections with my clients so that their personalities, stories, or spaces really shine through in the final images. To me, photography is never just about showing up with a camera. I also need to listen and learn what my clients want, and making sure they enjoy the experience. I think that’s what I’m most proud of: the relationships I’ve built and the trust people place in me to capture their milestones, their businesses, and their creative work. Many of the families I photographed when their kids were little still come back year after year. Now I’m capturing those same kids as high school seniors. It’s such a special full-circle moment, and an honor for me to capture the milestones as their families grow and change. That long-term connection and trust is something I never take for granted, and it’s one of the biggest joys of what I do.
