Conversations with Chris Jeter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Jeter.

Hi Chris, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My first time picking up a camera was in 4th grade when I took a photography class. My first ever picture was I had to take pictures of the Dallas skyline. I didn’t take it serious because I was so focused on basketball and football. The next time I would cross paths with editing/photography is in 10th grade when I edited “Jaylen Fails Senior Year Basketball Mix” on my iPad. After that video, I would make small hype videos for the football team when I was playing. That’s how I learned the basics of editing on my iPad.

After high school, not knowing what I would do, I started to DJ parties. With the money I saved up, I purchased my first DSLR camera (Canon T7i). In 2017 I would just go to Grand Prairie football games just to practice on my craft. Then in 2018, I made a big step taking my craft serious and joined The Old Coach. I would go to different areas in Texas and film games, that’s how I got my following to grow to what it is now.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This field of work is not a normal thing where I come from. Being a kid in Dallas, you are around hoopers and musicians, you understand being creative and standing out but no one around me understood photography/videographer. There isn’t a lot of African Americans in this field but it’s starting to change.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
During football season, I am a video producer/social media content creator for DeSoto High School. Any video you see on social media or even at home games on the big screen for DeSoto is produced/edited by me or Roberto Hernandez. My proud moment is seeing one of the videos played at Globe Life Field and being able to spread DeSoto Football social media nationwide.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
My mentor is Charles West from CW Studios (ATL). He helped me out a lot when it comes to different opportunities in the camera field and branding myself. A mentor can help you in a lot of different ways, even if y’all don’t talk everyday; having someone to help you in the right direction is always key. Someone I first saw do sports in Texas is Ibifiri Jamabo. He’s the one that made me do polls to see which games I would go to that week.
