Conversations with Christy Brown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christy Brown

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After spending 28 years in Corporate America, I found myself ready for a new chapter as an empty nester. I’ve always had a love for candles, but I never saw myself as a “crafty” person. However, I was curious about the process of making them and wanted to create something special. Inspired by YouTube videos, I dove into researching candle supply companies, wax types, wicks, vessels, fragrance oils, and scent profiles.

Through months of trial and error, I finally found the perfect combination that resulted in high-quality, long-lasting candles. I enlisted friends as testers to get honest feedback, and once I had my formula perfected, I launched Texas Sassy Candles in 2021.

The business started with me selling at local vendor events. Customers were drawn to the unique designs—especially the wood bowls—and the irresistible scents. Word of mouth spread quickly, and I began to see repeat customers and referrals. Over time, my candles, wax melts, and car freshies found their way into local stores like Lone Star Mercantile in Allen and Shoemaker & Hardt in Wylie, as well as Charlie’s Hamburgers at two locations.

I converted my garage into a fully operational candle factory to keep up with demand, which also allowed me to experiment with new ideas. While the candle market is competitive, I focused on standing out with unique designs, sassy scent names, and quality products. Vendor events remain one of my favorite ways to meet customers, and the holiday season is always a busy and exciting time for Texas Sassy Candles.

Looking back, I’m amazed at how far this business has come in just a few years. It’s been a journey of learning, hard work, and creativity. What started as a passion project has grown into a brand that I’m proud of, with a loyal following that continues to inspire me to push forward.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s safe to say the road hasn’t always been smooth, but every challenge has been a valuable learning experience. Starting a business from scratch meant wearing many hats—candle maker, marketer, salesperson, and operations manager—all at once. Balancing these roles while ensuring the quality of my products remained consistent was a challenge in itself.

One of the biggest struggles came when I partnered with retail locations. Initially, my products did well in high-visibility areas, but when they were moved to less prominent spots, sales dropped significantly. It was frustrating to see my products not reaching their potential, especially after putting so much work into them. Navigating these partnerships, finding the right fit, and deciding when to move on has been a learning curve.

Another challenge has been standing out in a highly competitive market. There are countless candle brands out there, and it took time to find my unique identity. I leaned into what made Texas Sassy Candles special—sassy, themed scent names and high-quality, beautifully designed candles that resonate with my customers.

The unpredictability of vendor events was another hurdle. You never know what kind of turnout to expect, and sometimes sales aren’t what you hoped for. But even on slower days, I gained exposure, networked with other small business owners, and connected with loyal customers who kept coming back.

Lastly, scaling production was a test of both time and patience. Converting my garage into a candle factory was a game-changer, but managing inventory, staying ahead of trends, and preparing for busy seasons (while still being a one-woman operation at times) pushed me to grow both personally and professionally.

Through it all, I’ve learned to adapt, stay positive, and trust the process. Each obstacle has shaped me and the business into what we are today. Challenges are inevitable, but they also make the successes even sweeter.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At Texas Sassy Candles, we specialize in creating high-quality, handcrafted candles, wax melts, and car freshies with unique designs and unforgettable scents. Our products are made with care, using premium ingredients that ensure a clean, long-lasting burn. What truly sets us apart are the sassy, themed names for our scents—often with a country flair—that add a fun, personal touch. Customers tell me all the time that the names make them smile and keep them coming back for more!

We’re known for our distinctive wood bowl candles, which have become a signature piece in our collection. They’re rustic, stylish, and fit beautifully in any home decor. We also pride ourselves on offering scents that appeal to a wide variety of preferences—from cozy and warm to fresh and invigorating.

What I’m most proud of is our commitment to great customer service and hearing how much people love our candles. I love listening to customers share how much they enjoy the scents, the style, and their excitement when discovering something new. Building those personal connections and creating a product that brings joy to others is what motivates me every day.

What truly sets Texas Sassy Candles apart is our focus on creating an experience. It’s not just about the candle—it’s about the personal touch in every product, and the connection with our customers. We go beyond just selling candles; we aim to bring joy, warmth, and a bit of sass into people’s homes.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Something most people don’t know about me is that I’ve never been a crafty person. I’ve spent the last 28 years of my life in various analyst roles for one of the top three national beverage companies, where I focused on numbers, data, and strategy. My work was detail-oriented and structured, which is about as far from the creative world as you can get!

When I started making candles, it was a complete shift from what I’d always known. I wasn’t someone who naturally gravitated toward DIY projects or artistic hobbies, so the idea of creating something from scratch was both exciting and intimidating. The process pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I found myself drawn to the challenge of blending creativity with precision—figuring out the right wax, fragrance, and wick combinations.

It’s funny to think that I went from analyzing sales trends and pricing strategies to designing candles with sassy scent names, but that’s what makes this journey so special. It’s proof that you can discover new passions at any stage of life, even if they’re completely different from what you’ve always done.
