Conversations with Craig Rathman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Rathman.

Craig, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My family moved to Aledo/DFW last March (2021) for a new position my wife took as a corporate trademark lawyer in Ft. Worth. I had been at home with our 2 kids at the time, up to 3 now, since my wife was the main breadwinner. I needed something to do as in-home hobby/side business as a stress relief, so we decided on a small CNC machine to try my hand at. I had 10 years of CAD experience working in the automotive world in the Detroit, MI area figuring it transfer over some. Long story short that business blew up and turned into full-time gig. Along with custom designing pieces for myself to use and machines I now make a lot of design for other CNC router owners and sell them on Etsy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part of this business was figuring out what type of designs to offer that didn’t already have a over saturated market.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in 3D designs to be machined on a CNC router. I also specialize in the CAD software Vectric Aspire that I use to create these designs. In the CNC/CAD realm, I’m most known for my heavily detailed 3D designs that are mainly for military personnel. What sets my design apart from a lot of others is my extreme attention to detail and being a CNC router operator knowing what makes a design look good in the real world once machined.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
The quality of work I produce. I believe this is the most important because people are willing to pay more and wait longer for a piece of greater quality and detail.
