Conversations with David McLorren

Today we’d like to introduce you to David McLorren.

Hi David, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve always been passionate about music. I began my journey in the early 1990s in Virginia Beach, where I truly made my mark in the industry. Initially, I sang with a band, but later, I took up instrument learning and eventually ventured into the engineering side of music production and recording. Fast forward to the early 2000s, I recorded, produced, and released my first solo album, even before performing at a jazz festival in St. Lucia. From there, my career took off, leading to numerous awards, collaborations, and opportunities to produce for others. The key to my success lies in my unwavering discipline, insatiable thirst for knowledge, and relentless pursuit of continuous creation.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The journey was not easy, given the changes in the industry and the advent of streaming platforms that cater mostly to major artists and labels. Making a living solely on streams is not even viable, and recouping the production and marketing costs of an album or single is nearly impossible. On the other hand, there are instances where people lowball you for being an independent artist. Despite these challenges, the passion and love for creating music that people enjoy have been my driving force. I don’t regret being able to do what I love, as it has afforded me the opportunity to connect with people from various countries, backgrounds, and cultures.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
