Today we’d like to introduce you to Daylon and Lauren Moore. They and their team shared their story with us below:
We filmed our first wedding in September 2019. At the time Daylon was still working as a teacher and pulled in Lauren, a full-time nurse, to help. We fell in love on the spot! We enjoyed the environment, the people, and the responsibility in being the ones to capture something so special. In Spring of 2021, Daylon left teaching to run Blue Shadow Films full-time. Even though we’re based in Texas, we’ve gradually moved into destination weddings, with about half of our yearly weddings being travel. In the last 2 years, we’ve had the pleasure of filming in some of the most beautiful places in the world and for some of the most genuine people you could ever meet.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There’s plenty of challenges in running a small business. Unlike a W2 job, income can be quite inconsistent. You have to plan ahead and work around slow seasons and long periods with no bookings. That’s part of the game! The struggles can be bittersweet in that it gives you a chance to be innovative and shake up your normal business routine. Also, anyone running a small business and raising a family will tell you that your time can get spread pretty thin. Work/Life balance has been a big thing for us since we dived into this full-time. We want to be present with our kiddos. We’ve adjusted out processes over the years and our editing times take a little longer, but we no longer spend family vacations with our heads buried in a computer.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
We specialize in candid wedding films. We strive to capture footage to the best of our ability and as aesthetically pleasing as possible without sacrificing genuine moments. We believe a wedding day shouldn’t be a manufactured production. Our job is to preserve what happens on a wedding day and capture the essence of a couple, not create something that isn’t authentic to who they are. We think what sets us apart is that we wholeheartedly believe that our ability to serve a couple on their wedding day outweighs the product we’re going deliver. We think how someone remembers you treating them is going to have more value than a beautiful picture or video. That’s not to say that we aren’t striving to create beautiful films, but we work around the moments that are happening in real-time, not altering a moment to work around us.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you, and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The COVID-19 crisis taught us the importance of having a plan B, and C and D, and E! We weren’t heavily affected with Covid reschedules but had a few. With something like a worldwide pandemic, you have to understand that people didn’t choose to have their long-planned wedding shutdown. They didn’t choose to delay and replan everything. You have to adapt and be flexible, and above all serve the couple.
