Conversations with Deonna Crump

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deonna Crump.

Hi Deonna, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hello,
My name is Deonna and my business name is Lynn’s Essentials. I am a 36 year old single mother of 4 from Memphis, TN. I moved to Texas around 6 years ago to better myself and my children. I am a youth leader at my church where I lead and support youth and community programs, create polished communicates, have a passion for encouraging others spiritually. I love spending time with my family and church family. In my free time, well I don’t get it much, but when I do just know I am with my children.
How did I get started? Well, doing hair has always been like a therapy to me. Getting my hair done has always been an issue, but I love doing hair. If you know, you know. I started braiding my family members’ hair for their quick weaves or sew-ins. I started actually doing their hair while I was in hair school in 2013. I started to love doing natural styles, locs, and braids. I love making men, women, and their families feel good and look great. Sometimes you fell like you may be the ugliest (or unpretty) person in the world, but once you get a fresh cut and a new style, well you can’t tell me that doesn’t help you put the best outfit together or even get you in the mood to just put clothes on to run to the store. Looking your best isn’t always up to you. Get you someone who can help you feel great when you’re feeling to down to do it. That’s what I do.
Today, I am where I am because of God, family, and friends.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not being an easy road at all. Making sure you’re in the area or connected with the right people plays a big part. No having the right support team will deteriorate you from even getting out the bed. At one point I gave it all up because I felt like the support wasn’t supportive. I felt that if my family and friends aren’t supporting me, then who will? Don’t think that way!!!!! I realized that I needed to be my own support. My own number one fan. It took a while, but I got out of that funk and starting over or from the beginning is never easy. If it is, then please give me the recipe.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a braider! I specialize in braiding and doing natural hair. I am mostly know for braiding, re-twist, and styling locs. I am most proud of being able to do anyone hair who sits in my chair. Being able to build a connection with them. What sets me apart is that I am a saved braider. I do hair out of my home or I will travel (within in reason). In my chair, we will listen to gospel, watch movies, watch tv shows, or we will talk about Jesus.
I am different because I am not in a hurry (I don’t rush) to make the client feel better. The client is already beautiful or handsome, I am here to help make them feel great after their hairstyle is completed.

What’s next?
My plans for the future is to teach parents and children how to part and to braid. There is a lot of people who need and want the help, but don’t know where to go or pay outrages prices. I will be that person for them. I want to open my own salon suite. I want to help others that wants to get out of their homes be in their own room. Be a mentor for others that still are trying to get off the ground. I want to encourage all that it isn’t easy to start doing something you love doing, but its definitely worth it. I want be able to reach adults and youth people and as I teach them about hair I can also teach them about Jesus.
