Conversations with Destiny Owens

Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Owens.

Hi Destiny, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I begin to have ideas back in 2019. I had just gone through a divorce, and I had a very close friend talk me into starting my own business. “Consider something you love like your lashes or lipstick!” So, I ran with it. We talked at the time as if it was a dream, but that dream quickly turned into a reality. I moved to Tyler right when COVID hit; it was definitely a blessing in disguise at the time. Because everything shut down, I was able to have more time to watch videos and study on how exactly to get this started. As I studied, it became more of a boutique than just lashes. I kept working at it and ran into a lot of encouragers (I call my angels), and also made new friends in Tyler who not only supported my business but helped push me forward to it. Now I am known around the DFW and East Texas area regarding my business. I have been in newspapers and also on the local television news as well. God has definitely had his hands in my business, and I thank Him for it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Having a small business while being a single parent is never easy. My kids will always come first, and I will never apologize for it. So that would definitely be one of the main struggles in maintaining my business because in order to start and keep a business you definitely need money. You will always start upside down in the beginning but if you just keep pushing yourself it’ll get there. Another struggle would be marketing. Being active and going to pop-up shops, constantly posting on social media, trying to come up with new ideas and videos is very tough. Doing those things daily is a must in order to get and maintain attention to attract customers to your business.

Lastly, trying to be a one-man show. To run a successful business, you must have others to help you because trying to do it all will drive you up the wall!!! If you can delegate things to people such as like an accountant, marketer, or etc, do it! It’s definitely good to learn for your own knowledge, but you must let others help if you want to be successful. And that is not a bad thing because if your business has gotten so big you can’t manage it all on your own, that means that it is growing and excelling in the way it should, so that is good news!

Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently a nurse as well. Which helps me decipher products when purchasing because for example when I purchase my lashes, I am not just purchasing for women to look good during special times but during work as well. I HAVE to wear glasses during work, but I LOVE my eyelashes. So, I said to myself one day “I wish I had lashes that were full and dramatic but small enough to wear with my glasses. Instead of looking and pondering on the idea, I decided to implement it into my business. So now I can represent my business at work and give the working woman something beautiful to look forward to.

What matters most to you?
God then my children. Without God none of this is possible. I speak with Him daily regarding my business and allow him to not only give me ideas for it but shine his light on it. I believe God can sit little ol’ me in high places with my business by keeping him first in my life and I will make sure I do just that!

My kids are so important to me because they keep me going. They are my drive and motivation not to give up. They come and help me set up and take down. They are the best thing in this world I could ever pray for, and I’m so grateful that God trusted them in my care. I couldn’t dare think of doing this without them.
