Conversations with Dylan Humphrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Humphrey.

Hi Dylan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve been decorating cakes since I was 12 years old. It all started in my grandmother’s kitchen when I was a little kid! Starting in Junior High School, I started making wedding cakes and cakes for all occasions out of my parent’s kitchen. I had no idea that it would be a major hobby of mine or maybe a future business plan! I am mainly self-taught other than the Wilton classes at a local arts and crafts store at the age of 12. This venture has given me the opportunity to travel the world and appear on multiple international networks and streaming services. Such as Food Network, Food Network Canada, and Disney+. Shows include Christmas Cookie Challenge, Cake Wars, Dallas Cakes, The Big Bake, and Disney’s+ Foodtastic.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a small business at the age of 20 years old goes as smooth as pushing a little red flyer over a train track with no suspension, no power steering and let’s not forget the potholes that just randomly show up right in front of you. Not to mention in this wagon, you are carrying a 7-tier wedding cake. At the end of the day, the cake gets delivered, and everyone is happy. You learn just like every other day to make the next day better. You always have to keep a positive attitude. Nothing to my knowledge, can prepare anyone 100% of the struggles that small business owners encounter.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Custom Cakes for all occasions. I consider myself a pastry engineer. I take light, delicate, moist cake that everyone loves and design structures that will support this medium to make people’s pastry dreams come true. We have hung cakes from ceilings, made working waterfalls flow through cakes, and created life-size edible art such as lions, golf carts, colleges, country clubs, etc. Let’s not forget electrical aspects as well, such as lights and motors. There is literally not a challenge that we are not up for.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yep. If you know, you know… after Covid 19…

We have noticed that Common Sense Fails to Exist, patience is not a virtue anymore…the list can go on.

The main lesson I have learned is that things can return to normal if we can keep a forward positive attitude towards others, like the “Good ole days,” we are all human, we just need to remind ourselves that sometimes. I have noticed a change for the good, though.
