Conversations with Ebony Hudson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ebony Hudson.

Ebony, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started at the age of 12. I used to watch my cousin do hair in her kitchen every weekend. One evening she sat me down and showed me how to braid. What I did not know was she was showing me how to braid so that I could help her with her clients because she would be busy and backed up every Friday and Saturday. Shout out to my cousin Jessica for introducing and inspiring me to become a hairstylist. Fast forward a few years after that, I dropped out of high school at the age of 16. My mom gave me the option to either go to the military or go to college. So I decided to take up the trade of cosmetology. Just being honest, I never imagined being a hairstylist; I always wanted to be a teacher. However, I knew that being a teacher required more schooling, which was something I was not interesting at all. So I completed cosmetology school within 15 months. I started working at a nail salon right after cosmetology school. Again I didn’t want to do hair right out of school because I really didn’t have a passion for doing hair. My passion for hair came within the past two years of being here in Dallas. How did I get to Dallas, you ask???

In the year of 2019, I went through a horrible divorce which caused me to move to Dallas and start a new life. Starting a new life in Dallas was not as easy as I thought it would be. However, I never gave up because I knew that I had a purpose here in Dallas. Within the first three months of being here, I lost my car, and I was evicted from the apartment I was living in. Although I went through a lot of trials in tribulations, I was determined to keep striving! Within my first six months of being in Dallas, I landed a job at a barbershop. The barbershop was extremely slow for at least the first 3 to 5 months. Not only was it slow, but the United States experienced something no one could have ever prepared for, which was the spread of COVID-19. Some people I know took horrible losses during these times; however, by the grace of God, my daughter and I was extremely protected and covered and after being in the house for two months when the barbershop opened again, my sales begin to increase . I don’t wanna mention the name of the barbershop. However, I will state that I went through a tough time being there because I didn’t have transportation and I couldn’t afford childcare for my daughter. So for about nine months, I took my daughter to work with me every day. Some months I would work seven days a week because I needed the money! Fast forward now, I currently have my own salon in Plano, TX and I have my own transportation! I also can afford to send my child to school while I work, and business is continuing to rise!!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all! I’ve seen highs and lows since I’ve started my new journey here in Dallas! When I Move to Dallas, it was in the beginning stages of my divorce process. So not only was I going through a divorce I was also getting adjusted to the other transitions that were taken place in my life. Within the first three months of being here, I lost my vehicle, and I was also evicted from my first apartment here in Dallas. Aside from my personal life, I was also trying to create a solid foundation for my business life which started off slow, but it eventually picked up within a few months.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
TRUST THE PROCESS and SURRENDER TO THE CALLING!!!! If someone had told me I would be where I am now just three or four years ago, I would not believe it. The plans I had for my life were nothing compared to what the most high had destined/ordained for my life.

I remember having a conversation with my father and I told him I wanted to be a pastor like him when I grew up and he told me, sweetie, whatever you’re called to do you’re not going to want to do it. So when I meditated on what he said, it just came to me like an epiphany. I really don’t want to do hair, but I’m great and skilled at it, so why not give it my all. I knew the potential benefits it would have on my life, but I didn’t want to sacrifice my time to commit to the calling!

I literally worked as a substitute teacher for three years and become comfortable with only making $500 weekly and now I make $500 a day depending on the day!
