Conversations with Elizabeth Reay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Elizabeth Reay.

Hi Elizabeth, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been mesmerized by art and design ever since I can remember. The unspoken power it can have has been something I’ve been chasing to recreate again and again in any way I can my whole life. I’ve always gravitated towards graphic design, and as soon as I realized that was a career path, I set my eyes on that, so I got my BFA in Graphic Design from School of Visual Arts in NYC. When I’m not doing client work, I focus a lot of my free time on designing the long-running list of ideas I come up with. My favorite thing is to simply create things that make me smile, and I hope to always share that with others so they may also feel something from it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I think the biggest struggle (and most consistent) has been forging my own path and realizing it’s okay that it looks different from others. The pandemic really solidified for me that I want to create for the sake of creating because it’s how I express myself. Anything beyond that, as far as how many likes or sales I get, I remember that I do it for myself first and foremost. There are still some days that the algorithm messes with my head but getting back to creating helps me reset from it.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love designing and making things that make people happy. Most of the time that looks like art prints designed to be a pop of happiness wherever they go. I’m a big fan of bright colors and bold patterns so I tend to use them a lot in my work.

What’s next?
I’ve started expanding beyond print-on-demand products and having my work more specially printed like my most recent Riso print of Chase Your Daydreams. I’ve been thinking about participating in local art fairs/markets to sell them and find a bigger spot for myself within the local creative community.
