Conversations with Emily Good

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Good.

Hi Emily, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I first started a small custom t-shirt business when my primary job slowed down and we were all unsure how much longer we would be employed. About a year after starting that business and seeing how many supporters I had, I decided I wanted to make my brand more personal and meaningful. That’s when I decided to create a brand I’m personally passionate about. The more passion you have behind what you’re trying to accomplish, the more likely you will succeed and continuously grow. Thus, FWF, Fort Worth Fit, was created. My biggest outlet of stress is working out and being in the gym with like-minded people. I love to share and teach others any chance I’m able to, I gravitate towards people who love to grow and flourish with the right guidance. I went into opening my small business blindly, not knowing if it was the right decision, but I fully invested myself regardless of the negatives. I had a lot of doubters but my supporters always outweighed the negative. FWF is different, we’re about community. We’re not about competing with others, but we are about competing against ourselves. The goal is to always grow and be better than yesterday, we’re a community within a community and everyone that is part of FWF feels that and continues to support my business for that reason. I’m not looking to get rich, I’m looking to help others love their selves more while advancing my small business and working towards dreams of my own. My end goal is to one day open and run my own small fitness training center.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Small businesses are hardly ever a smooth road. I’m a single mother of two young girls. My children are with me 90% of the week. That in itself is a struggle at times. It really hit my family when all three of us were hit with Covid three separate times. I lost out on 6 weeks of work total. 2 of which I was too ill to run my business, but the other 4 I was able to stay home with my daughters and make sure they were well taken care of while still pushing my business and supplementing the income that was lost due to not being able to report to my job. It’s a constant struggle being the head of a single-parent household, that stress will never change, but it’s a blessing to show my daughters how much we can succeed based on how much we invest into ourselves. Both of my children know pieces of the process of making shirts and they help me quite often, my 10-year-old is actually FWF’s first paid employee.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a Quality Analyst at a family-owned business, SigmaPro Engineering in Fort Worth, Texas. I specialize in Quality Control. I’m known for always making people laugh and making jokes out of terrible situations because circumstances could always be worse and I hate to see people down, sad, or struggling. I’m most proud of working myself up through the company. I started at the bottom of the company as a Production Operator and my movement to Quality Analyst is something to really be proud of. I’ve worked at just about every department of SigmaPro and the fact that I blend well in every area really says a lot about my personality.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
You should never limit yourself. My childhood was not a very good one at all. My mom had multiple mental health disorders and was a victim of drug addiction and my father was absent my whole childhood. I was in and out of foster care and ended up adopted into a family that wasn’t much better than what my mom had to offer. As a child, never would I think that I would be where I am now. To some, it’s not much, but if you know the situation I was born into, this is everything. I own my own home, car, and small business; all while working a full-time job and being a full-time mom. I doubt myself pretty frequently, but I’m just getting started, and it’s all to show my daughters that there’s no limit to what we can accomplish as women, even in the worse situations, on our hardest days. Giving up is never an option.
