Conversations with Eric Amstutz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Amstutz.

Hi Eric, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story is interesting. I grew up a lower-middle-class kid from Fort Wayne, Indiana, that wanted more out of life. I joined the Army at the age of 17 and went to Basic Training my senior summer in 2001. I graduate Basic Training just 16 days before 9/11. I got the opportunity to finish high school, then complete my military initial training as well as graduate from Ball State University with a B.S. in Risk Management and Insurance. In 2006, I got the call to go to Iraq in support of Iraqi Freedom, where my unit spent 12 months in Ramadi, Iraq, the most dangerous place in the world at the time. Upon returning home from Iraq, I separated from the Army.

At this time, I started my insurance industry experience with State Farm, then later began my career with Liberty Mutual Insurance in 2011. At the same time, I picked up my MBA online at Kaplan University and re-enlisted in the Army National Guard in 2009 to become an Officer. For the next 13 years, I would manage a full-time career at Liberty Mutual and an Officer career in the Texas Army National Guard. This required nearly 2 years away from Liberty Mutual for trainings, missions, active-duty assignments, George Floyd riot response in the streets of Dallas, COVID response, polling station activations, and more. My military career ended in November 2021 after Commanding an Airborne Logistic unit in support of an Airborne Infantry Battalion in the DFW area.

In 2016, I started to lead a Diversity team at Liberty Mutual called Valor, designed to support our current service members and Veterans. This lead to a deep fulfillment of my passion to serve by creating Veteran hiring initiatives, mentor programs, military programing, working to help increase current service member benefits, and more.

Last, I became an Author in June 2023, releasing the book “How to stay looking and feeling 10 years younger,” A book helping men stay young. While the subtitle suggests this is just for men, 85% of the book is gender-neutral and applies to both men and women. The book is not just about diet and exercise, it’s about mindset, stress management, adapting to change, sleep, supplements, skincare, and more… The book came as a need to continue to help and serve others. I often get told I’m 28-30 and turn 40 on July 9th. My hope is this book helps others get the same compliments.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I grew up from a lower-middle-class family. I always say I was “bullied” to success. High school was not friendly to me, but I learned how to challenge that energy and use it to become successful in life. This started with joining the Army. Then balancing an Army career while going to college to obtain my degree. Then going to war at 22. War took a toll on the mind, but I was able to overcome that and continue my quest with obtaining my MBA.

In my book, I have a chapter called full send,” which is really about managing stress. While I was effective at it, when you fully send in one or two areas of your life, others get neglected. My biggest failure in my life is my divorce. Everything in life came relatively easy to me, but because I didn’t prioritize my marriage, I lost it.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I have been with Liberty Mutual for 12 years and in my 7th role. My title is Director of Project Management, but primary role is to lead a team responsible for helping our property claims department determine how many claims we are going to get from weather and non-weather events to ensure we have the right number of staff to service our policyholders. If we are effective at our job, we reduce 3rd party expenditure resulting in money saved for our policyholders which ultimately impacts their premiums.

I’m known for being aggressive, assertive, finding opportunities, but caring deeply for the people on my teams. “You are the hardest boss I’ve ever had and the best boss. You always have our back and recognize your people”.

What sets me apart from others is my undsationable desire to add value and self-growth. I’m a constant student, always challenging myself personally and professionally to learn something new and continue to get better.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Dallas is a melting pot of young professionals with so much opportunity. The city offers so many networking opportunities with like-minded individuals, if you are giving back to others in this city you will see the benefits in whatever endeavor you are pursuing.

Dallas is missing water! Its land locked with a few lakes, but city lacks the recreational activities that other cities have to offer. They even recently closed the Sandbar downtown that was a staple for the city as it relates to outdoor recreation.
