Today we’d like to introduce you to Eric Eaton.
Hi Eric, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I started magic when I was 7 years old. I watched Criss Angels TV Show called Mindfreak and saw he was getting girls with it so I was like I want to do that. At the age of 15 I started going to places like Las Vegas and Hollywood to street perform. This allowed me to build my act and get used to different types of audiences and the way people reacted. Doing this also allowed me to build my act to be more personable to people. Then by age 17/18 I was able to headline comedy clubs and theaters and at age 20 I was fortunate enough to be put on a tv show called Masters of Illusion. Then at age 22, I won a Merlin award (the Oscar’s of Magic) for Outstanding Comedy and Magic. Then fast forward to today I am still traveling the country doing comedy clubs and theaters, as well still being on Masters of Illusion.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I will be honest I have had a pretty smooth career thanks to people willing to help me and venues taking a chance on my act. Don’t get me wrong a lot of practice and joke writing happens behind the scenes that no one sees but it’s all worth it. I think one of the hardest struggles that I found when starting out is one getting the gig. I am pretty young and started even younger so venues were unsure about a late teen and early twenties kid being able to do a whole show and keep the audience engaged. Then once I got the gigs starting off it was hard to get people to the shows. As now I have to convince them why they should come watch. Luckily word of mouth, promotion across the venues, and the tv show have helped me be able to really pack them in and sell-out shows now.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a comedy magician mainly cater to an adult audience as I predominantly work comedy clubs and when I do theaters we try and keep them 18+. One thing that really sets me apart that people seem to really like is my quick wit. I really try to connect with audience and be more personal so that every show is unique and different. While I have set tricks, I’m doing I don’t fully have a script as I don’t want the show to come across that way. I want everyone to feel involved. Another thing that people really like is I am a little bit on the mean side. I like to make fun of people and situations but it’s all in good favor. Everyone leaves happy because they know there is no harm behind it. I am fortunate enough that the people who come to my shows understand that and the ones that do not know who I am appreciate it and join the ride as well. As adults we are always looking for ways to have a fun time and escape whatever may be going on in our lives and sometimes getting made fun of for certain things in front of a crowd makes you realize we are human and all have our flaws. This in return makes those insecurities and stress kind of disappear, kind of like magic haha.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is my audience. I want everyone to be able to enjoy the show and have a good time. I want people to be amazed by the magic and while also being able to laugh and stay loose. After my shows I stay after and meet with the audience as they took the time to come out and see me the least, I could do is say thank you. During that time though I get to hear people’s favorite tricks and it allows me to build a show they want to see. I also get to hear stories about how people are going through tough times and coming out tonight is the first time they got to smile and laugh in a long time. Those are the moments that means the most to me as I feel I am helping make a difference for people.
