Conversations with Everett Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Everett Lewis.

Hi Everett, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a Filipino/American male from Los Angeles County. I grew up in a sports-oriented household, but I gravitated towards performing. At age 12 I started to perform at various FIL-AM association-related events across Southern California. In high school, I was involved with both the theater and show choir programs to an obsessive degree.

In college (2012), I studied Musical theatre for 3 semesters and in that time, I gravitated towards songwriting and making my own medley covers of contemporary pop songs I was into at the time. After going through a tough break up, I went through my most prolific period of songwriting where I discovered my sound what my style is. I’m heavily inspired by Blink-182, Bo Burnham, and also various musicals.

In 2015 I moved from my home to Fort Worth where I focus on having a normal 9-5 life and put music aside and kept it as an occasional hobby. January of 2020, I went to my first open mic in Dallas at Opening Bell Coffee and fell back in love. As of Summer 2022, I have started performing live regularly in the Denton and Dallas area. It’s been an amazing experience finding such a supportive group of fellow songwriters and creators.

Soon I will be going into the studio to record my favorite song “Dadbod (1993).”

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The hardest part is consistency and making the time to work on my craft and having a full-time career in IT. Finding time to write music, perform live, and produce demos at home. They are all completely different skills and are an art of their own.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have a career in Information technology as an Enterprise Data Analyst for a mortgage company. I am fortunate enough to fully work from home which provides me to work on music when I have free time on my hands. I could make more time to go to the gym though. Having a background in tech gives me skills that I can integrate into learning how to use studio software to produce music on my own computer.

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
I learned how to cut my own hair which I still do to this day. Life is so short, and a good amount was taken from all of us. I learned not to wait around to do what makes you happy. Not just making and performing my music but the amazing people you meet as a result. We are more than what we do for a living.
