Conversations with Fnu Milat

Today we’d like to introduce you to Fnu Milat.

Fnu Milat

Hi Fnu, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey began in the bustling streets of Kabul, Afghanistan, where I grew up in a poor household. Life in Afghanistan during those times was incredibly tough, with economic hardships and ongoing conflicts shaping our daily existence. Despite the challenges, I learned the value of hard work and perseverance from a young age.

At just 9-10 years old, I started assisting my father in selling socks, gloves, and hats on the streets of Kote Sangi to support our family. My father, battling with Rheumatoid Arthritis, faced physical limitations, making it imperative for me to step up and contribute to our household income. Eventually, my father transitioned to selling bakery products, but his health continued to deteriorate, necessitating me to take on more responsibilities to sustain our family.

As I grew older, my interactions with the US forces stationed in Afghanistan sparked an interest in working alongside them as an interpreter. Determined to pursue this path, I diligently studied English and Pashto languages, preparing myself for the opportunity to serve as an interpreter for the US Army. When I turned 18, I seized the chance and successfully passed the recruitment test, marking a pivotal moment in my life’s trajectory.

Deployed to Kandahar, one of the most dangerous regions in Afghanistan, I served as an interpreter and cultural advisor at Forward Operating Base Pasab. My experiences during this time, navigating through both challenging and rewarding situations, instilled in me valuable lessons and insights.

In 2014, as the US began its transition out of Afghanistan, I returned home. However, fate had another plan for me. I was granted a Special Immigrant Visa, paving the way for me to start a new chapter in the United States. Coming to the US was not just a possibility but a dream that had now become a reality. Relocating to Monterey, California, and later settling in Dallas, Texas, I embarked on a journey of adaptation and growth.

In Dallas, I worked tirelessly in various roles, from warehouses to restaurants, all while pursuing my education. With determination and dedication, I earned my Associates Degree in Business Administration and delved into the realm of Full Stack Web Development. Simultaneously, I supported my family back in Afghanistan, sending them financial assistance regularly.

Driven by a passion for real estate and inspired by the iconic real estate career of former President Trump in New York City, I embarked on a new venture. With guidance from mentors like Reahim Budri, founder of Budri Group, I obtained my real estate license and joined Citiwide Properties Corp as a real estate agent. My goal is not just to facilitate transactions but to make a positive impact on people’s lives by helping them find their dream homes and navigate the complexities of selling their properties.

Throughout this journey, I’ve been supported by my significant other, Sarai, with whom I’ve shared nearly 8 years of companionship. Together, we’ve explored neighborhoods, attended open houses, and dreamed of our own place to call home. Her unwavering support and encouragement have been instrumental in my pursuit of personal and professional growth.

Looking ahead, I am committed to continuous growth and strive to become a trusted advocate for my clients in their real estate endeavors. Through perseverance, empathy, and dedication, I aim to contribute positively to my community while achieving personal and professional fulfillment.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many journeys, mine has been filled with its share of challenges and obstacles. One of the primary struggles I’ve faced is the transition from a vastly different cultural and socioeconomic environment in Afghanistan to establishing myself in the United States. Adapting to a new country and its customs and navigating through various systems and processes posed significant challenges, especially in the initial stages of settling in.

Moreover, pursuing a career in real estate presented its own set of challenges. As a newcomer to the industry, I lack the experience and network that more seasoned professionals possess. Building credibility and gaining the trust of clients is a gradual process, requiring persistence, dedication, and a willingness to continuously learn and improve.

Financial stability was another hurdle I had to overcome. Starting from scratch in a new country meant facing uncertainties and financial constraints. Balancing work, education, and supporting my family back in Afghanistan added another layer of complexity to the journey.

Despite these challenges, I’ve approached each obstacle with determination and resilience. Through hard work, perseverance, and seeking support from mentors and peers, I’ve been able to navigate through these difficulties and continue moving forward towards my goals. Each challenge has been an opportunity for growth and learning, ultimately shaping me into the person I am today.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those who are just starting out in the real estate industry, my advice would be to seek guidance and mentorship from experienced professionals. Having a mentor who can provide insights, share their experiences, and guide you through the steps is essential. Without a mentor, starting out in this industry can indeed be challenging.

Additionally, I would advise newcomers to focus on building relationships and networking within the industry. Establishing connections with other real estate agents, brokers, and industry professionals can provide opportunities for learning, collaboration, and growth. Attend industry events, join professional associations, and seek out mentorship opportunities to expand your knowledge and expertise.

Furthermore, continuously invest in education and training to stay updated on industry trends, market developments, and best practices. Take advantage of resources such as courses, seminars, and online resources to enhance your skills and stay ahead of the curve.

Ultimately, starting out in the real estate industry requires perseverance, dedication, and a willingness to learn and adapt. By seeking mentorship, building relationships, and investing in education, newcomers can set themselves up for success and embark on a rewarding career in real estate.
