Today we’d like to introduce you to Gene Orozco.
Hi Gene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
This is Gene! I’m the vocalist of Gene Ross. To get started, the band started off as a solo project during COVID. 2023 was the year that I realized that I wanted to pivot from being a solo project to becoming a full fledged band. The catalyst was that after meeting Jacob, as I had him originally be a fill-in guitarist for Gene Ross, I remembered how much I missed being in a band. He was the first person that I reached out to regarding the start of the band.
Starting in 2024, as I began writing with the band in mind, I started realizing that I wanted to solidify our sound to be more post hardcore/metalcore compared to the projects original alternative sound. This was the year that Jack (drums) entered the fold. Already having a previously established relationship with him, he integrated into Gene Ross smoothly.
2025 was the year where we finalized and established our lineup with Trent (rhythm guitar) and Dominic (bass)!
Flash forward to today, we have doubled down and grounded ourselves as a post hardcore/metalcore band that isn’t afraid to take inspiration from a diverse range of genres and other forms of media.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, at all. Navigating interpersonal relationships and establishing relationships with four other people is not something that could be easily accomplished overnight. There needs to be plenty of communication, hang-outs, and support from all of us to each other. Managing and working out a viable schedule with 5 twenty-something’s is almost an impossible task, but with discipline, we make it work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I guess what sets us apart from others is our willingness to explore other forms of media and pull from other genres for inspiration, as I mentioned earlier. As much as we want to provide a true metalcore experience, we also want to push the genre and explore different avenues to make the music that we grew up with, more interesting! I also appreciate that we are a team that prides ourselves in thinking and planning ahead. There’s always a lot of groundwork that has to be done, the foundation has to be laid.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
As a band, we define success as being able to make positive change in our community through our music. No matter how big or small we are as a band, we will always aim to advocate for people in our community. On a realistic note, what also defines success is being able to make this band sustainable for us in the long term.
