Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerardo Garcia Alvarez and Evelin Gonzales.
Hi Gerardo and Evelin, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
As with any business, I believe that it starts with an idea. I believe you find something you’re good at and put to practice and perfect it and hope for the best. In this case, it was create a delicious authentic pupusa estilo San Miguel (San Miguel style). Whenever we would have house parties, potlucks, we were always asked to bring or make pupusas. We started with friends and family offering a pupusa plate. At first, it was discouraging to sell so many plates, but when the food is great, word of mouth is where things get rolling. With time we went from selling 5-10 plates to selling 30-50 plates. After a while I ran into an old friend who is the owner of Jazzys Tacos, she introduced us to the world of being a mobile food vendor. I’ve been to many events and festivals but we never knew that one day we would be vendors offering our famous pupusas. It took a lot of promoting of ourselves to get where we are today.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
As with anything worth doing, it does not start smooth, we were unexperienced and had no idea what we were doing, but as you do more events, the more experienced you become, after that, everything becomes natural and second nature. But my wife and I believe it was finding a balance between our private life and our social media life. A lot of time has to go into the business if you want to establish a presence.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We are a mobile food vendor, we specialize in Pupusas, the national dish of El Salvador. While we are known for our pupusas, my wife believes our Salvadorean Horchata towers over our pupusas. But it’s the perfect combination for any occasion. I’m very proud of my wife for all the sweat and hard work she has poured into achieving this goal that she’s had for a long time. While I really only handle the P.R part and the budget, planning, and organization of the business, but the talent and magic that brings Cheros Latin Kitchen to life is my wife, Evelin. I cannot speak for other food vendors, but we use the best ingredients at our disposal, we make everything from scratch and use that special ingredient LOVE in our pupusas, we take quality control as our highest priority in everything we do. We believe consistency is key, I believe that sets us apart from others.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Not only am I in charge of P.R, I’m also the taste tester, I call it quality control, lol
