Today we’d like to introduce you to Gina Lecca.
Hi Gina, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Looking back, I have always been a creative kid and loved drawing any time I could find a pencil. My dad has constantly encouraged my creativity and made sure I had the supplies I needed. When it was time to apply to college, I really didn’t know what I wanted to do, but my dad guided me to pursue graphic design at the University of North Texas.
I am currently a senior studying Communication Design, and I couldn’t be happier. To further my learning, this past summer I started interning at Caliber Creative which is an independent branding agency in Dallas. The wonderful opportunities at this agency has solidified that this is what I want to to do with my life. I am currently working on my last year at school, and I’m excited to see what the future has in store for me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like many creatives, imposter syndrome is something that I am constantly dealing with. Sometimes we feel like our work isn’t good enough or that we don’t compare to our peers. However, I’ve learned it’s important to not source your value as a person in your work but rather in yourself. Every project I create isn’t always going to be my best, but the process of each one is crucial to becoming a better designer.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a graphic designer dedicated to finding effective design solutions. I utilize both digital and traditional art techniques but am most skilled with Adobe software and ink drawing. My favorite part of the design process is the collaboration aspect which allows for different perspectives to piece together an effective solution.
I am most proud of the projects that took me outside of my comfort zone and allowed me to discover new ways of finding a solution. I find that my willingness to step outside of my comfort zone allows me to never stop learning and growing as a creative.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Taking risks is an important part of being a designer. I am personally a cautious person, but I have learned that some of the most exciting solutions come from risk taking. Practicing risk taking allows me to feel comfortable stepping outside of my comfort zone and to trust the process. Even if the risk I take fails, I am still learning from the outcome which helps me grow as a designer.
