Conversations with Gowri Nadella

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gowri Nadella.

Gowri, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey began after I was scouted by a modeling agent at 13 years old in my home of suburban Chicago, where I currently live and have grown up in. Typically, when a stranger walks up to an adult and tells them their child has a look fit for the industry it’s can appear a little unsettling, however, the agent who approached my mom and I turned out to be a modeling agent from Chicago. Though I did not end up signing to that particular agency, that experience got my ‘foot in the door’ industry wise.

A few months later, I signed with MMG Models in New York City- a modeling agency in the top 1% of agencies worldwide, and most recently, signed with AEFH Talent in Los Angeles. AEFH is in the top 4 youth agencies in the world and signing with them has been incredibly fruitful. In between these major milestones, I have gotten the opportunity to model for several brands including Walmart, UOMA Beauty, walk in Chicago Fashion Week, and several other jobs. While on paper my journey in the industry appears seemless, it is the result of several years of hard work and unwavering dedication.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
One of the biggest challenges was navigating getting my footing in this industry. I am the first in my family to pursue a professional career in the fashion/entertainment industries, therefore, even from the age of 12, I was spearheading my growth and career singlehandedly. In an industry like the entertainment industry, there are hundreds of thousands of individuals vying for the same opportunities and jobs as you.

I quickly learned that if you are not the most hardworking person in the room, there will always be someone prettier, smarter, and more hardworking. This realization tremendously helped me navigate parallelism of being a teenage model. I am very privileged that my family has grown alongside myself in their understanding of the fashion/entertainment industries.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When it comes to labeling myself, I am hesitant to employ words such as model and actress. I like to say I model and I act, and leave the identification up to others! I have gotten the incredible honor of modeling for UOMA Beauty, Walmart, working on a music video for The Head and The Heart, upon other jobs. Throughout my career, I am most proud of my mentality and work ethic. I frequently draw on my experiences of being Indian American and utilize instances growing up not seeing representation in traditional media, to propel my drive to further work hard. I believe this sets me apart from others.
