Conversations with Grace Dowling

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Dowling.

Hi Grace, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started doing photography when I was little. My mom would always enroll me in these summer classes to get rid of my ADHD butt as I could be a lot to handle. One of the classes she ended up enrolling me in was a photography class. I ended up falling in love with it but didn’t really think about it as a career until I worked for my community college’s newspaper and a graphic designer and photographer.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not one photography is expensive and my dad was the only one that worked in my house due to my mom being on disability. I also struggled with having surgeries during college. And a couple of car accidents. I was also at one point heavily medicated by a doctor for my mental illnesses that the doctors didn’t think I would be able to live on my own due to such badly declined mental and brain health. AKA falling asleep at the wheel of my car at noon, therefore, crashing my car.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The thing I am most proud of is my bachelor’s degree. It took my time to get it and I worked hard for it. I dealt with back surgery, covid hitting, the loss of my grandfather weeks before graduating, 3 car accidents, and a mental crisis in the span of my five years it took to get my degree. It still shocks me that I did it. I am a photographer that specializes in boudoir, wedding, and portrait photography. Along with dabbling in landscape photography on the side. I have a bachelor’s in photojournalism for the university of Central Michigan. What sets me apart the most from others is I would say I am super competitive meaning I want to be the best in my area of expertise and I don’t want to stop doing what I am doing ever. I have a passion for my photography, especially for boudoir, and I like to think it really shows.

What do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is everything? I am generally a very happy person. But I will say getting the opportunity to live where I do makes me happy. I am originally from Michigan but came to live in Texas after falling in love with it during a mission trip and internship down here. People also make me happy I love being around others.
