Conversations with Herbert Walters, Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Herbert Walters, Jr.

Herbert (Musik) Walters,Jr.

Hi Herbert, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
As a child, my dad gifted me a keyboard for my birthday, and I fell in love with the piano. As I became a teenager, I began building instrumentals on the few recording slots I had on my piano. I would record short songs on my phone and send them to my friends for feedback. Fast forward to my senior year in high school where I wrote my first full song. I’ll never forget graduating June 4th, 2011, having dinner with my family, and having my very first 2-hour studio session. From there, I was hooked on the music, and over time, I learned to engineer. I started having children young, so I figured the most affordable way to pursue my dream was to build my studio and learn to be the man behind the computer and that is just what I have done. Over the last 13 years, I have released 2 mixtapes, 1 EP, 2 albums, and 1 compilation project, all engineered by me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Being a single father for most of my career has made it very challenging. Being able to book shows and make appearances to network was always a challenge. Between my children, my job, and music my time was spread very thin, and I can’t be in more than one place at a time. I’ll never say my kids are the reason I didn’t push harder; I just didn’t feel like they deserved to endure the sacrifices I wanted to make. Another issue I have is not having the local “Dallas” sound. I am from Garland, but most listen to my music and get an East Coast vibe. My guess is it’s from my selection of beats I use. I am not, and I have never been a club person, so my music has never mixed well with that scene, so booking clubs isn’t my thing, and Dallas has more than plenty.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
For the last 5 years, I have been in the Architectural industry. I started as just a warehouse employee, and I worked my way through the channels to becoming an Estimator.

The thing I am most proud of would be my marriage. I married a beautiful woman by the name of Faye, whom is also a middle school crush of mine. We have a beautiful family of 12 (10 kids plus the two of us), and I must say it’s never not exciting.

What sets me apart from others is my confidence. I know the energy I bring and the impact I have on those around me. My spirit is uplifting, and I believe I make those around me better at what they do.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
My kids make me happy. I know they will always love me because of the bond that we have created. I know I’ll never be truly alone in this world with them. They are the motivation and the drive for success.
