Conversations with Irma Guzman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irma Guzman.

Hi Irma, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My name is Irma Guzman, and I was born and raised in Cartagena (Colombia), a vibrant, colorful, old colonial city located in the shores of the Caribbean Sea. I am the owner and designer of Irma Guzman Eco Jewelry. I design a modern interpretation of artisanal jewelry made of natural materials. I started making jewelry for fun until my family and friends took notice and began buying my designs. I can’t believe it’s been 14 years since I started! Irma Guzman Eco Jewelry was created inspired by Colombia, an incredibly biodiverse country. Colombia is home to a variety of nuts and seeds, these fantastic native materials form the basis of my jewelry collection, including my favorite material, tagua, which I use in most of my pieces.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, not at all! It hasn’t been a smooth road. I had to learn through trial and error, I took design courses, and I had to learn how to mix colors, textures, and shapes harmonically. This was a process that took years without mentioning the marketing side of this business. I also had to learn how to market my products on the internet, how to get clients, and I had to be consistent and persistent. There were difficult months, many ups and downs and I just wanted to give up, but I firmly believe that God was helping me every step of the way, otherwise, I would’ve quitted a long time ago. Nowadays, I’m thrilled to say that my designs have put a smile on many women’s face not only nationwide but also all around the world!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I design jewelry with natural materials such as seeds, tagua nuts, wood, coconut, seashells, stones, horn, and bone. Most of my designs are inspired by nature, exotic places and my hometown, Cartagena. I work with my team of artisans in Colombia to find the very best quality materials for my collections, all of which are sourced with care, besides when you buy my pieces, you are supporting the local artisans in Colombia to make a living.

What matters most to you? Why?
My family! My husband and sons are my source of joy and motivation.
