Conversations with Jack Hein

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jack Hein.

Hi Jack, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I came here as a refugee kid back in 2015. Took Art class and got into Ceramics. Thought it was just a hobby, but I changed my major to art and got my bachelor in Studio Art with Ceramics emphasis. Decided to pursue a Master’s degree in art. And I am getting my terminal degree in ceramics.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a kid I moved to different countries. I was born and raised in Myanmar for 12 years. And came to Malaysia and lived there for 5 years. And moved to the US in 2015. It was such a huge transition as a kid. I was a way from my parents and live in the school hostel since I was 12 . And the language barrier was a hard thing . Came to the US when I was comfortable in Malaysia. I was struggling with English and art was one of the things that I can communicate

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently in my final years of Grad school. I specialize in Ceramics. My works are inspired by the migration and memory throughout my life. The appreciation for porcelain became my most drive in ceramics. I creates things that is more focused on forms and textures. The softness of the materials. I came from nothing and this is my third degree completion. I see the world differently than others, applying my struggles into something inspiring. With the passion to explore the limits of porcelain through my story

What makes you happy?
My art practice makes me happy because I am not expecting anything but just to create. At the end the day, I am making the things that I enjoy and it is rare for anyone.
