Today we’d like to introduce you to Jacob Grapevine
Hi Jacob, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
One of the first things you notice about someone is their smile. I love being able to serve people by elevating their smiles. I was fortunate to attend one of the best dental schools in the United States, The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. After graduation, I wanted to hone my skills more and attended the Advanced Education in General Dentistry at Texas A&M School of Dentistry at Baylor Dallas. I decided to purchase my own dental practice in Plano, Texas to allow me to care for patients the way I thought they deserved to be treated. I practiced in that location for 10 years. In 2018, I purchased a second practice and combined them into one and moved into a new space down the road. I have been fortunate to have an amazing team at my side to provide quality care to the DFW metroplex area.
I have reached a point in my career where I have connected with mentors and study groups to take me to the next level. This has led me to practice a different type of dentistry that focuses on total patient health versus just caring for one tooth at a time. The mouth is the window to the whole body and research is coming out more and more of how important oral health is for overall systemic health.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anytime you are serving people there will be challenges. Some of my challenges came with transitioning with the retiring dentists. I appreciate it may be hard for them to have this big life change and to watch someone else take on their life’s work.
I found that walking in grace and treating everyone with respect is the way to go about challenges.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a general dentist but not “just a general dentist”, as I have heard people say. I have chosen to take extra educations and partner with mentors who have helped me learn to treat TMJ (Tempromandibular Joint Disorder). As part of this treatment, I often do composite resin veneers to address the wear and bite problems that come with this disorder. This is something that I find very rewarding as TMJ can be a very painful disorder. It is often misunderstood and misdiagnosed for a while before a patient is properly diagnosed and treated. I also really enjoy doing cosmetic smile makeovers. These can be done in porcelain or can be done in composite resin. The composite resin is amazing as it does not require teeth to be shaved down and is all hand done by me so it is very custom with shape and color. This type of treatment flows well with our goal to treat the whole person and get to the root of the issue versus just patching teeth as they fail.
What matters most to you? Why?
I love teaching patients how to find dental health. That way they can reach a state of dental health and then focus on maintenance and prevention. I have studied how a healthy mouth works and what leads to a healthy mouth over a lifetime. Studies indicate the primary determinant is the health of the gum tissue and the bone around the teeth. I provide a risk assessment for my patients that addresses 4 key areas of health:
1. The gums and supporting structures of the teeth
2. The health and fit of the teeth in the mouth
3. The function of the jaws and muscles
4. Cosmetic concerns or wants by the patient
From there, my team and I approach the patient and provide options to prevent, protect and renew their oral health and smile.
