Conversations with Jamie Smith

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Smith.

Hi Jamie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Being an athlete in High School, I had some serious muscular injuries. one of our team Moms was a massage therapist and she single handedly nursed me back to health and I was able to finish out the season. I knew then that I wanted to help people how she helped me. As soon as I got into College, I knew i wanted to go to massage school. So, after I graduated, I went. I worked for various companies, chiropractors, sports teams and spas gaining knowledge on the body and business for years. Finally, after 20 years working for others, I had the courage to start my own business and acquire my CE provider license as well. I’m 10 months in, my business is thriving and grows everyday. I’m so grateful to be pursing my dreams and living in my purpose.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When you walk in your purpose, the path won’t always be easy. every challenge becomes fuel, every setback becomes shaping, and every step pulls you deeper into who you were created to be.

Leaving my fulltime job to start my own business was a sacrifice. I was confident in my abilities to help others but was unsure if I had what it takes to keep my books full and no knowing how long it would take to get there was a real challenge. I stepped out on faith solely.
I used my life savings to purchase to property, insurance, tools, supplies and furnishings needed to start up.I had to rely on other professionals( i.e. commercial realtors, Insurance agents, contractors). I had to learn new skills, on property management, managing my own books and balancing my time. I had to learn to set boundaries with my clients and myself. Most importantly, I had to learn to trust myself, believe in myself and push myself further than ever before. I would risk it all again. I still don’t know everything, I am constantly adapting and growing in way I never thought I could or would.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a 20 year Licensed Massage Therapist, a licensed Massage Therapy Instructor and a Continuing Education Provider. I specialize in Sports massage and recovery. I am most proud of how I overcome my own fears and conquer them on a daily basis. I know I am very skilled, yet I am humbled by the power of healing through the knowledge of anatomy. I’m fascinated still on how much pain relief can be provided in just one session.
I feel like that is what sets me apart from others, I strive to understand each and every client. Unafraid to ask questions and push the limits. I educate each client on the WHY. This muscle antagonizes that one, so we need to work here, assuring the client of the connection. Gaining trust and openness with each session. Together we resolve muscular dysfunctions. Its absolutely beautiful.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
If someone is looking to start a small business and needs a mentor, I strongly suggest SCORE.org. It’s an SBA website that offers free mentoring and provides many resources. I have found that with my business, the best advertising is hands down, word of mouth. Also, once I had so many 5-star reviews on Google, my business just pops up when someone is looking. I have never paid for advertising. I know that doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s been working for me.
