Conversations with Janet Sherlip

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Sherlip.

Janet, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey into floral design began in one of the most inspiring places in the world—New York City. I moved into a tiny apartment in Hell’s Kitchen and spent six immersive weeks training in the Chelsea Flower District. I attended floral school, learned directly from experienced designers, and earned my New York floral license after interning at a boutique shop on the Upper East Side.

When I returned to Texas, I brought that blend of New York artistry and Southern warmth with me and launched what would eventually become JKS by Design. What began with small custom arrangements quickly grew into a full floral and event design studio.

A major turning point for my business came when I began partnering with the Plano Chamber of Commerce. They welcomed my creativity, trusted my vision, and gave me the opportunity to design florals for their events. That visibility and community connection helped JKS by Design grow from a passion project into a well-respected floral studio known for creating meaningful, beautiful moments.

Today, JKS by Design continues to evolve, offering custom arrangements, event installations, floral classes, and design services—with the same heart, creativity, and personal touch that inspired me back in New York.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. One of the biggest lessons I learned early on is that while communities are full of wonderful, caring people, a small and growing business can also be vulnerable. My natural instinct has always been generosity. I love giving, supporting, and showing up for others. But I quickly realized that generosity without boundaries can lead to situations where people unintentionally take advantage.

Learning to balance my heart with healthy business practices has been an important part of my growth. Setting clear expectations, valuing my time and talent, and understanding that “no” is sometimes just as kind as “yes” has strengthened both me and my business. It’s been a journey, but one that has helped me serve my clients with even more clarity, confidence, and purpose.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am the owner and designer behind JKS by Design, a custom floral and event design studio built on creativity, connection, and a true love for making moments feel magical. I specialize in creating bespoke floral arrangements, event florals, large-scale installations, and intimate design experiences for both private clients and community organizations. Every arrangement is crafted with fresh, in-season blooms and a signature style that blends classic elegance with intentional, meaningful details.

I’m known for bringing heart into every project. Whether it’s a monthly/yearly floral subscription, a nonprofit gala, a neighborhood gathering, or a large community event. My clients trust me because I don’t just deliver florals; I deliver an experience. I listen deeply, design thoughtfully, and treat every arrangement as if it were going into my own home.

One of the partnerships I’m most proud of is my ongoing work with the Plano Chamber of Commerce. Creating florals for their events helped elevate my business and connected me to a community that values collaboration and creativity. Through that partnership, and many others across North Texas, I’ve been able to support local nonprofits, arts organizations, and community groups with floral donations, creative design, and event support.

What truly sets me apart is the personal touch behind everything I do. I take the time to understand each client’s vision, story, and purpose. My goal is always to make people feel seen, celebrated, and cared for. Flowers are my medium, but connection is my mission. And that combination of artistry, heart, and community is what makes JKS by Design more than just a floral studio.

Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I believe flowers have a unique way of bringing people together. They soften rooms, start conversations, and remind us to pause and appreciate beauty in the everyday. JKS by Design was built on that belief, and my hope is that every arrangement or event I create adds a little more joy, comfort, and connection to someone’s life.

I also want to encourage anyone reading this who has a dream—big or small—to take the first step. My journey began by packing a suitcase and flying to New York City for six weeks of training without knowing exactly where it would lead. Sometimes the most meaningful paths start with a leap of faith.

And lastly, I’m grateful for every client, partner, and community member who has supported my work. It has allowed me not only to grow a business, but to serve the community through creativity, generosity, and authentic connection. That is the greatest privilege of all.
