Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Martin
Hi Jason , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I used to work at a sweetener plant as maintenance. While working one day I almost fell off a beam pretty high up. That was the day I talked myself into ordering a tattoo starter kit. So it came in the mail that Friday. I did a tattoo on myself first. Then I tattooed my two upstairs neighbors at the time and my ex. I took photos of those tattoos up to a local shop to show the owner. Upon showing him the photos I asked for an apprenticeship. He told me to check out some other shops in the area. He told me that if I didn’t get in with any of them to come back and he would show me. I waited 3 days, I never went to any other shops. When I came back and said I didn’t want to work anywhere else he then took me as his Apprentice. One time for Steve Rotundy!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning I didn’t feel like I belonged. But once I got good at tattooing then I was embraced by my clients which also comes with mixed emotions from other artist. At the time when I started there weren’t a lot of tattoo artist that looked like me. Then the tattoo shows started airing. Now all of the clients started mimicking what they saw people on TV doing. That was interesting. Managing and fighting for the money and clients over the years has had its ups and downs. Overall the lifestyle is great!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I have been drawing since elementary schoo, that’s how I got through school. Doodling in class while taking notes. I’m proud of my ability to show up and take over the day with just pure effort to be great while trying to affect everyone around me with the same energy. I specialize in doing pretty good tattoos while giving my customer a smooth experience. I have never wanted to do just a few different stuff tattooing. I’m thankful to be able to approach many different types of tattoos. My strength is being able to be a chameleon in my industry.
What does success mean to you?
The definition of success to me is being a hero for your family. Providing the guidance and insight that your family needs for life navigation. Attempting to leave things better than you found them.
