Conversations with Jaudon Markell

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaudon Markell.

Hi Jaudon, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
My journey in photography started out as an elective my senior year of high school. My teacher at the time felt like she had seen something in me and immediately consulted to have me placed in her AP class. Soon I found myself showing some of the work I did at a UIL competition and earned my school letterman. After graduating, photography was no longer on my mind. I got accepted into UNT and started my degree plan in Communication Design, but I quickly learned that was not the route for me. By the end of the semester, I received my credit for the intro class, changed my major, and got right back into photography. At that point, my perspective changed. Photography was no longer just a tool to document what I see in front of me. It became a tool to create what I envision.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been an interesting ride to say the least. The first two years on this journey I managed to gain clientele, promote my work in local shows, and got featured and or mentioned in a couple of magazines and articles. Once the pandemic arrived, most of the world was at a standstill and suddenly there became time to take a breather. I never expected that time to last as long as it has, but it gave me a chance to practice and invest more into my craft. Now with things slowly going back to normal it’s beginning to feel like a fresh start.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a creative and freelance photographer in the DFW. Creating and capturing moments is my forte. When it comes to my work, I like to take the stylized approach. Lighting, composition, and tones is a trifecta that I stand by. I’ve heard and seen a lot of people describe my work as something that looks like it could be a movie. Which is flattering considering how much I love film. Not long after I got into photography, I started to look at movies differently. I realized that cinematography and photography can go hand in hand, and I began incorporating similar techniques from cinema into still photos. I’m definitely proud of my portfolio so far, but over time I can see it growing passed my expectations if I keep this ball rolling.
