Conversations with Joshua Olivo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Olivo.

Hi Joshua, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
So, I moved around a lot when I was younger and at a new school, I forgot which bus to take home. I asked to leave to double-check with the office but my teacher assumed I was trying to ditch class early and asked if anyone else lived on the same street I did and Juan raised his hand. That was 7th grade and since then, dude and I have been best friends with a heavy influence of 2000’s era pop-punk. It wasn’t long till I really discovered blink-182 seriously and Juan already had a guitar so it was inevitable a band would start. After-school we would sit and write the beginnings of what would become Worst Case Scenario. Years later, we had some songs but no drummer so we put out an ad on Craigslist and found Cameron as a gigging musician. He wanted to play and he was amazing, anything he played sounded tight and really made the sound of it come together. I think that was when the band really kinda started. That summer we went to the studio and recorded our first record paid for by Juan and I with our band savings. That was the start, since then we’ve played shows and continued the writing process to start the beginnings of another record titled DFW because we’re from the DFW area and we’re Down For Whatever haha.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s been chilling, the shows are fun and the feeling of seeing people sing the silly songs we write is crazy because I can read their lips and I can tell they legit know the words! It’s unreal. However, most of the struggles I would say are internal, I think any musician has tons of self-doubt in their abilities or quality of their music. Some days it’s harder finding the energy to tell my inner self to stop overthinking each social media post or that the lines my brain comes up with are good enough. That being said, I try not to stress about the band too much and instead focus on what we’ve created together as a team. Financial stuff can also be a little stressful but no matter what, there’s no price to make music so hopefully we’ll be making music together for a long time, I’m very proud of where we are.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m the bassist and vocalist to Worst Case Scenario and I take my job kinda seriously, I’m not sure how “punk” it is but I think it’s really sick when a bassist can really play and bring the energy. I can’t even bring anyone down, almost every bassist I see in other bands kill it in terms of technical skill so I have a lot to step up to. That being said, I’m extremely proud of the stage presence we have, I think we act like ourselves on stage and people always leave our shows either saying we were really funny or they love that energy. I think Cameron hates it but one of my favorite live bits are when we mess up on stage and gotta stop and restart, it never fails to make the crowd laugh especially if we call out who messed up. Extremely fun, the live shows I think are when we can be at our strongest.

What’s next?
So, we released Goodbye with Danny goo back in February, and then we decided to save for a record. We’ve started the process of it all, most of it now is collecting funds to finish paying it off then its whole enchilada. Some lyric writing and then bing bong we’ll have a record hopefully. I think for the rest of this year, we’re taking it easy for the holidays but soon as 2022 starts I’m sure it’s shows, online presence, and saving hardcore for the record. I can’t wait to show everyone when it’s finished. We’ve started playing one song from it live called “Groundhogs Day” and the crowd seems to really enjoy it.
