Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Rainer.
Kara, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I am a late bloomer and I finally made the jump to get into acting late in life. After doing a few years of theatre in my college days, I didn’t jump in with both feet until 12 years ago. A tragedy in my family made me realize that life is too short and I didn’t want to leave this earth without at least trying to go for my dreams.
And that dream was to be an actress! I had no idea how to do it or which direction to go but I just started asking questions, attending networking events, and taking acting lessons and now here we are 12 years later where I have had some cool opportunities with no plans to stop!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
A struggle is all in how you look at it I think. I think the fact that a super shy girl with not a lot of confidence jumped into a career where you are constantly judged creates some struggle. Early on, it was really hard to hear so many no’s! You can easily slip into the mindset of not being enough, but somehow I have grown beyond that attitude and have overcome that obstacle with confidence.
I think with constant study, growing in the craft, and always working to fine-tune, confidence began to bloom. And now, I can see the art of the audition as the job and not a rejection. I believe that everyone is unique and we all have certain gifts to bring to the table. I may not be right for one role but I may be perfect for another.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am an actress who didn’t get started really until I was already in my 40s. I have done everything from commercials, hosting, red carpet interviews, TV and Film, and Theatre, including a glorious time, working Off-Broadway in NYC. I am super proud of a recent film that just came out in theatres across the country and is now available on digital platforms here in the US and internationally.
It is a western/horror film called “Black Wood”, directed by Chris Canfield. I was only in 1 scene, but it was a doozy! I don’t know that anything sets me apart from others, but I am someone that wants to only do my best in any part of a role from auditioning to booking to filming. Being professional and bringing my absolute best is very important to me.
When I’m on a project, I see myself as part of a team and I want to be there to do my part and be supportive of others, actors, and crew. It takes a village. Everyone is important from the background actors to the lead actor, from the Executive Producer to the PA.
In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I think the acting industry is always going to be here in one way or another, but I am encouraged and excited that there are more and more networks creating their content which in turn creates more opportunities for all creatives.
