Conversations with Katie of Magnolia Paperie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie of Magnolia Paperie.

Hi Katie, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
After moving to a new city with my brand-new husband, I didn’t know anyone at all! So, I decided to teach myself calligraphy and hand lettering with worksheets and workshops and a lot of Amazon orders for new supplies. I slowly started adding new things to my repertoire; first, custom wedding stationery, then photo styling products, and finally, full-service wedding stationery from save the dates, invitations, and calligraphy envelopes. After having my first child, I decided WHEW I need to take a step back from Magnolia Paperie to just focus on this new part of my life. Then we moved again, had another baby, and moved yet once more, this time to Dallas 🎉 During COVID, I starting watercolor painting and slowly started offering products to family and close friends like notepads, party cups, personalized stationery, etc., feeling more fulfilled than ever, I decided to relaunch Magnolia with a full rebrand; and I have been hooking wedding stationery clients, selling my products on the website and wholesale in so many cute DFW boutiques!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
it’s been smooth to in some ways and rough in others. I truly love and enjoy what I do, so learning and growing creatively has been incredible. But obviously, Like any creative or small business owner, you doubt yourself more often than not. “Am I good enough? Will this sell? Oh, look at that business, they’re doing so much better than me! Did I make a huge mistake?” Having a good support system helps SO much though.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Watercolor artwork, custom paintings, luxury wedding invitations, and fun party goods!

I am certainly most proud that I am completely self-taught (with a few workbooks here and there). And I truly love what I do; I want to create wedding invitations that become heirlooms; I want to get to know my wedding clients on a personal level to create their dreams. And I love to throw a good party, so I want to offer fun goodies and gifts for everyday life.

As for wedding stationery clients, I only take on 10 weddings per year so I can give them my undivided attention and creativity. I love to create custom watercolor designs for each client, including pet portraits, city maps, and more.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
A rising tide lifts all ships. Get involved with your local creative community (we’re everywhere 😉). Reach out to people who you admire, ask them to mentor you, or to show you their favorite resources!

Most importantly: JUST START. Do it your way, don’t try to be someone else, focus on your passion and your strengths
