Today we’d like to introduce you to Kayla E.
Hi Kayla E., we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Kayla E. I am a Dallas, Tx native. I am 24years of age and I grew up in Cedar Hill, Tx. I found my voice at the age of 3, I started singing before I could even talk. I grew up in the AME Church and that’s where I began singing on a regular basis. Growing up I knew that I wanted to be in the entertainment industry, I wanted to sing, act and dance, but it wasn’t until I heard and saw Beyoncé, Whitney Houston, and Kierra Sheard- Kelly that I knew singing was my passion. Within the last few years, I’ve released two original songs, performed on stages around the DFW area, and out of the state. I also do BGVS professionally, and have been apart of various different vocal groups and bands. I’m also 1/3 members of ‘The Songbirds’ (an artist collective), and a part of the band Reggie T. & The Boneheads. I’m currently working on visuals for my most recent single “No More Love”, along with other projects, and shows soon to come. Stay Tuned!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey into music has been a roller coaster ride of emotions. So many amazing opportunities and experiences. I can admit in the beginning it was frustrating and disappointing from the lack of results and progress being made. However, I have learned that great things take time. I’ve also learned to enjoy the journey. It’s so easy to get caught up in reaching a specific goal/destination, that we miss the beauty in the actual journey. Burnouts, anxiety, stress, and depression are some a the few emotions that I have felt over the past few years in this music world. It’s not always easy nor fun. It’s about being disciplined and grounded in your craft! Constantly showing up for yourself and being consistent! As a result of these things you are able to see more and better results.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a singer/ songwriter and performing artist.
I am not your typical singer. The goal isn’t to show you that I can sing. The goal isn’t for you to know the songs I may sing or sing along with me. The goal is to invite you into a different world and see life through the words and melody that I sing. A new way of connecting and communicating with the audience. Creating a story. I want you to feel something… whatever that means for you. The ability to be myself and being okay with who doesn’t understand that. I’m proud to say that’s what sets me apart from others.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like best about Dallas is that we have so many great opportunities to expand and grow. There is always something happening in the city. The community is big and it creates a fun atmosphere for new creatives.
What I least like about Dallas is we tend to overlook our own. With all the amazing opportunities that we offer, a lot of us creatives still do not get the recognition we deserve. It can be very discouraging and frustrating.
