Today we’d like to introduce you to Kesha Summerhill.
Hi Kesha, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I spent 24 years in education, starting out as a teacher and serving the last six years of my career as an elementary school counselor. I truly loved and still love working with students and helping them grow, giving them the tools and confidence they need to reach their full potential. That work will always be part of who I am.
In July 2024, after a very long and challenging school year, I made one of the hardest decisions of my life. I resigned, but deep down I knew it was time. As a child, I always said that one day I would own my own sno-cone business. That dream had been sitting in my heart for years, and I finally listened to that inner voice telling me, “Now is the time.” So I stepped out on faith.
In August 2024, I launched my business full blast. I purchased my trailer on July 3, 2024, which was my birthday. I purchased from this amazing man named Matthew, who not only sold me the trailer and the entire business but connected me with the right people to learn the business. To this day, I truly believe God strategically placed the right people in my life to help guide me, because I honestly went into this journey not knowing much at all. From the trailer to the generator used to run my business, God knew who to send to me to help with any questions I had about the business.
As a mom of two amazing kids, Madison and David, everything I do is bigger than just me. They are the inspiration behind the name M & D Sweet Treatz. I want them to see what it looks like to walk by faith, work hard, and turn a dream into reality. More than anything, I want to leave a legacy for them. One built on courage, purpose, and believing that it’s never too late to go after what’s in your heart.
I am beyond grateful for the opportunity to live out my childhood dream. This journey has stretched me, grown me, and reminded me that it’s never too late to walk in your purpose. I still get to pour into students and families, just in a different way now.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Leaving a 24-year career in education was emotional in itself. I wasn’t just leaving a job, I was stepping away from a calling that had shaped a huge part of my life. There was fear, uncertainty, and a lot of moments where I questioned if I was really doing the right thing for my family.
Starting a business from the ground up with no prior experience in the food industry was another challenge. I had to learn everything about permits, equipment, inventory, budgeting, and marketing while trying to actually make sales. There were slow days that made me nervous, long nights where I was exhausted, and moments where I felt overwhelmed wearing every hat in the business.
One of my biggest challenges was having my generator stolen on December 13 right before leaving for a week-long vacation, and then finding out my insurance wouldn’t cover it, but God made a way and reminded me that I’m never walking this journey alone. I thank God for my supportive family and my new food truck family for allowing me to lean on them.
Financially, it has been a leap of faith. Steady paychecks turned into “trusting God and the process.” That stretched my faith in ways I never imagined. But every struggle came with growth. I’ve learned resilience and confidence. I’ve seen doors open through the right people being placed in my life at just the right time. And on the hard days, I look at my kids and remember the legacy I’m building by showing them what courage, faith, and hard work look like in real life. So no, it hasn’t been smooth, but it has been worth it.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I own M & D Sweet Treatz, a mobile dessert business where we specialize in fun, high-quality sweet treats like gourmet sno-cones, candy apples, caramel apples, and other carnival food favorites. We serve at schools, community events, fundraisers, and neighborhood gatherings, and we’re known for bringing not just great treats, but great energy and a family-friendly experience wherever we go. My background in education really influences how I run my business. I naturally connect with kids, families, and staff, and I love being part of moments that bring people together.
What I’m most proud of is having the courage to step away from a 24-year career in education and build something that reflects both my faith and my family. The business is named after my two children, Madison and David, and everything I do is centered around building a legacy they can be proud of. What sets me apart is the heart behind what I do. I’m not just serving desserts, I’m serving joy, connection, and community in every space I enter.
Any big plans?
Looking ahead, I have some big dreams for the future of my business. I would love to grow M & D Sweet Treatz into a franchise one day, creating opportunities not just for my family, but for others who have dreams of owning a business too.
I’m also passionate about eventually establishing a food truck park. A welcoming space where vendors can come serve their delicious food without being overwhelmed by extremely high vendor fees. I know firsthand how expensive it can be just to show up and serve, and I want to create a place that supports small business owners instead of making it harder for them. My goal is to build a community where people can do what they love, grow their businesses, and feel valued, not financially stretched before they even get started.
More than anything, I’m looking forward to continuing to grow in a way that creates opportunity, brings people together, and leaves a lasting legacy for my children and my community.
