Conversations with Kimberly Fryer

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Fryer.

Hi Kimberly, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?

I’ve loved capturing life for as long as I can remember. When I was three years old, my grandfather handed me a camera, and I started photographing everything—my family, my pets, even the smallest details around the house. That’s when I realized I was obsessed with preserving moments.

In high school, I took photography classes and learned to develop film and print photos in a dark room. Watching an image slowly appear on paper was magical, and it made me fall in love with photography even more. My first job was at a photo printing business, and I knew I wanted to help others freeze life’s moments.

Over the years, I started a family and took as many pictures of my children as possible, but photography as a profession was on the back burner. When I was in my early 30s, I left my abusive marriage and had to pawn my camera for gas money, and I did not have the funds to ever go back for it. I felt that my dream was over. Many years later, I decided to follow in the footsteps of a very well known Newborn Photographer in the family after she passed away.

That early fascination grew into a professional journey spanning over 10 years now, specializing in newborns and babies. Along the way, I’ve built a home studio, studied newborn safety, and now teach and mentor other photographers, sharing the experience I’ve gained. At times I also have apprenticeships and train single moms in newborn photography, so that they can also help have a better life.
I offer discounts to first responders and foster families.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Being a mom is incredibly rewarding, but it’s also hard work—emotionally, physically, and mentally. Starting over after a divorce from an abusive situation made it even more challenging to rebuild my life and eventually launch my photography business. There were moments when it felt overwhelming, and I had to rely on patience, determination, and trust in myself to keep moving forward.
Like many in the photography industry, COVID changed everything for a time. Sessions slowed, clients were cautious, and I had to adjust the way I worked to ensure safety while still providing a calm, nurturing experience for families. Those challenges forced me to be creative, flexible, and resilient—and ultimately, they strengthened my business and my approach. Thankfully, I already had a very diligent sanitizing process for newborn sessions, so I only had to start wearing a mask. Wearing a mask was difficult for me, as it caused me to get a migraine during every session.

Looking back, the difficult moments made the successes even sweeter. They reinforced why I do this work: to capture fleeting, meaningful moments for families and create images that last a lifetime.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m Kimberly Fryer, a Dallas newborn photographer and the artist behind KimberlyFryer.com. As a mom of six (ages 6 to 28) and a grandma, I know first hand how fleeting those first days are—and how important it is to preserve them safely, thoughtfully, and beautifully. A baby’s safety is always my first priority. Capturing their delicate newness comes second.

I am well known for my posed newborn pictures, and advanced poses. I recently moved to Dallas from the Houston area and we love it already.

Every session is slow, calm, and baby-led. Some babies won’t settle into certain poses—and that’s okay. If a baby seems uncomfortable, we move on. Parents tell me they can finally breathe, relax, and simply enjoy the moment, knowing their newborn is in experienced hands.

Many new moms arrive exhausted, overwhelmed, and running on very little sleep. I guide everything, handle every detail, and create space for moms to rest while I care for their baby.

It’s my desire to freeze time. I want you to be able to look back at these images years from now and feel exactly what it felt like in those first days—the tiny details, the fleeting expressions, the way they fit perfectly in your arms. Moms often tell me that when they finally see their portraits, they remember that all the sleepless nights and early mornings were worth it. This isn’t just a photoshoot—it’s an investment in your babies safety, while creating images you will treasure.

Beyond photographing families, I love to teach and mentor other photographers. Through workshops, online communities, and social media, I share what I’ve learned. I’ve grown an audience of over 170k on TikTok, more than 7 million monthly Pinterest viewers at times, and multiple Facebook groups dedicated to helping photographers grow safely and confidently

While newborns and babies are my specialty, I also love capturing other milestones. I photograph maternity, newborn, family, children, seniors, and cake smash sessions, creating timeless portraits for every stage of life.

Whether I’m photographing a newborn or teaching another photographer, my approach is always the same—intentional, gentle, and guided—so everyone involved feels supported, confident, and taken care of.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
lol, I am not a lucky person at all. This is a running joke among my family. My kids often say they get their bad luck from me. But I like to think that I am pretty lucky to have found a very supportive and amazing husband, who is also really good to my older children, he is a great stepfather. I am also lucky(blessed) to have already raised 4 amazing children in nuclear fields, emergency management, and teaching. I know they are all destined for great things, and that makes me lucky.

I am very lucky (or rather blessed) to have such amazing clients over the years, they have always been understanding, kind, and appreciate my art; because that is what newborn photography is, art.
