Conversations with LaDawnia Scott

Today we’d like to introduce you to LaDawnia Scott.

Hi LaDawnia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 2013 I was in a very dark place mentally and attempted to take my life. The short version is that God did not allow it, but I did spend a week in a mental hospital, and I knew that I would have to share my experience with others. As part of my healing process, I was journaling, which inspired me to write my 1st book, “Christian & In Crisis: Let’s Just Tell the Truth”. I have since written 2 more books and have launched my speaking business where I talk very candidly about mental health, trauma, & suicide prevention.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not a smooth road at all. Up until August of last year, I was a single mom, and even now I struggle somewhat in my finances. It wasn’t easy being transparent about my suicide attempt either, especially with the people in my church or family & friends who thought they knew me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a minister and published author; all 3 books are currently available on Amazon. I am currently establishing my business as a transformational speaker focusing on mental wellness/suicide prevention & awareness. I am most proud of being the mother of 4 (3 daughters, 1 son), and we have been through some hard moments and yet God has brought us through, and He continues to do great things in all of our lives.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was very shy and reserved when I was younger, and a big cry baby. It didn’t take much for my feelings to be hurt. I didn’t really talk a lot because I didn’t want to say something that someone didn’t like or disagreed with. I wanted people to like me, so I put on the personality I thought they wanted depending on who I was around at the time. It was years before I knew my own worth and was ok with not everyone approving of what I did or who I was turning out to be. I was on the dance team in high and was part of a singing group; we wrote our own songs and even put a cassette (aging myself) together of all of our songs.
