Today we’d like to introduce you to Laurel Simmons
Laurel, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My passion for photography started at a young age. I was ten years old when I got my first digital camera (a tiny red Kodak!) and started taking nature shots in my front yard. In my teens I fell in love with analog photography and started tinkering with old, beat up cameras I found at yard sales and thrifting. It was also at this point I started street and architecture photography. I then realized how much I love portraits! I spent 2023 learning about composition, editing, and every aspect of my DSLR, doing a lot of free sessions and having my sister model for me. At the beginning of this year I started working extra hard to show my work and get myself out there, becoming a photographer’s assistant and setting up a booth at multiple events. I’ve met so many beautiful people this year and have been blessed with countless experiences, and I’m so excited for what’s in store for me in 2025!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’ve definitely faced some challenges this year, but I guess that’s half the fun! Organizing and keeping up with the business side of things was a learning curve, and juggling my job with being a momma needed just the right balance.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I capture a little of everything, I haven’t narrowed down my niche yet! Most of my work stays within the realm of family and maternity, I love working with kiddos, I can always get them to giggle for that perfect photo!
I’m proud of how much progress I’ve been able to make this year. In October I took my business full time and seeing my work from January vs this December blows my mind.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I love the people! There are so many talented professionals and I find it easy to get along with almost everyone I meet.
On the other hand, traffic is certainly my least favorite thing about the city!
