Today we’d like to introduce you to Madison King.
Hi Madison, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I was born and raised in Southern California, just north of Los Angeles. I started my business, poppy + palm (formerly named Madison Leann Makeup), in 2018 when I began beauty school. I multitasked, going to school all day, Monday-Friday, for 6 months, all while building my lash business from the ground up. I had zero idea what I was doing at the start, but I was constantly educating myself & learning how to run a business. Shortly after graduating, I was so booked that I ended up being fully self-employed by the age of 19. I was working from the loft of my condo at the time when I was offered a space in a salon. After moving into the salon, I grew to the point where I was booked out a month-2 months at a time. My life took a 180 when I decided to move to Texas in September of 2021. I realized that growing up in my hometown didn’t give me much out of life other than daily repetition. If I didn’t leave then, I don’t think I ever would have. I needed a big change and a new start, so off to Texas my dog and I went. We went on a 3-day road trip halfway across the country with all the belongings I could fit into my car. I had already been chatting on Instagram with some beauty professionals who were located near my new apartment so when I went in to meet Abby at Beauty Squared McKinney, we hit it off and I ended up moving my business into her cute little salon. It’s been super tricky starting up my business again from ground zero, but it’s been nothing shy of rewarding. Starting over allows me to utilize all the skills I taught myself over the past 4 years. So far, it’s been going great and I plan on being fully booked within the next 2 months!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Absolutely not. Starting your own business at 18 with zero knowledge on how to actually run a business is ridiculously challenging. Once I kind of had it figured out was when things started taking off, but to this day I’m still learning new things and how to be a better business owner. The biggest challenge, though, was packing up my life to start over in a new state. I was going through a massive breakup when I decided to leave. Impulsive decision? Maybe, but I believe it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Starting poppy + palm over again 4 years in has been super tough, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a professional eyelash extension artist. I specialize in eco-friendly, luxury eyelash extensions. I’m most proud of starting and owning my own business from such a young age. I started poppy + palm when I was 18 years old. I’m 22, almost 23 now. The amount that I’ve learned and grown in the past four years, not only as a business but as a person, is something that I’m so incredibly grateful for. I believe that my work is what defines me and sets me apart as an artist. I always take extra time and care to make sure that everyone leaves with perfect lashes and is fully knowledgeable on how to take care of them so they last as long as possible before their next visit. I’m so incredibly passionate about my work, and you can tell just by looking at it.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
As cliche as it is, happiness. I strive to be a happier version of myself every day. I went through a very dark time back in 2019, it was tough for me to even get out of bed for a while. I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety. Now that I’ve gotten the help I needed and know what it’s like to be truly happy, that’s all I want all the time. I still deal with anxiety but I’ve learned the skills to help myself manage those bits of time. It can still be tough sometimes, but I still get up every day with a more positive outlook than the day before.
