Conversations with Marcos Morales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcos Morales.

Marcos Morales

Hi Marcos, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I always enjoyed music growing up, coming from the era of guitar hero/rock band. I didn’t know how or what I wanted to do with music but there was something unique about it. There was however, a feeling of being at odds with the music I wanted to create. I enjoyed ambient/post rock for its expansive dynamic sound but also liked the immediacy and energy of metal music. It was the discovery of bands like deafheaven, pelican, and russian circles that began the creative process for cloudvase.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The first musical ideas came about in late 2019. Songs were being put together, but it would be another three years before the band would fully form due to lockdown. At the time I was learning to write full compositions and put together a lineup which also took some time. The first lineup lasted a few months up until auditioning for a new drummer and guitarist. I would say the main obstacle has been patience.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an artist, audio engineer, and music instructor. I have been working freelance in audio for three years, along with teaching guitar/piano lessons in addition to writing/performing with my band. I would say I’m known for being an engineer as I’ve had the opportunity to travel throughout the country as an audio engineer. I think two of my proudest moments would be working with Jack White who’s been an influence on me and getting to work as boom operator and even land a background role in my first feature film with Lifetime. I believe having a background in production sets me apart because I can implement these practices/ideas and create differently from some of our peers.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Perfection does not exist. As much we like to chase the perfect take or “sound”, the idea of perfection can deter one’s creativity once you begin to obsess over minor details. I can recall a number of instances of meeting an artist and hearing them express things they wish they could’ve fixed when writing/creating some of my favorite songs; all completely unbeknownst to me, the listener. Create the art you feel compelled to make in however it manifests itself.
