Today we’d like to introduce you to Mayy Kalbouneh.
Hi Mayy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
From the outset, my journey as a photographer began by capturing images on my phone. I had a keen eye for interesting subjects and would eagerly anticipate the sunrise and sunset each day, often rushing to school to ensure I wouldn’t miss the opportunity to capture these moments. With a goal to improve my skills, I aspired to purchase a camera on my 16th birthday. During my sophomore year of high school, I made a decision that would shape my future as a photographer by joining the yearbook editing and photography staff. As I progressed to my senior year, I was entrusted with the responsibility of serving as the editor-in-chief of the yearbook, a position that allowed me to showcase my skills in design and photography. Through this experience, I was able to further develop my skills in portrait and sports photography, ultimately cementing my love for the craft. It was at this point that I realized my passion for photography was more than just a hobby; it was an integral part of my identity that I was eager to explore further. As such, I was determined to turn my passion into a side job and continue refining my skills. Today, photography represents more than just a means of creative expression to me; it is a symbol of my dedication and hard work in pursuing my passions and representing myself as an individual.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At the age of 15, I started my journey toward being a photographer, and ever since then, I have been committed to honing my abilities and knowledge in this field. I have faced many difficulties and problems over the years, but I am pleased with how I have endured and developed both as a photographer and as a person. I strongly believe that with commitment, effort, and determination, anyone can achieve their goals and succeed in their chosen field. Despite the lack of easy paths to success, maintaining a positive outlook and optimistic mindset is essential to overcoming hurdles and achieving one’s ambitions. I’ve remained unwavering in my determination to keep studying and developing my skill throughout my trip. To hone my talents and broaden my knowledge, I have participated in numerous photography projects, attended workshops, and did online researches. As a result, I’ve gained a lot of expertise that has helped me develop as a photographer. Overall, I am happy with my progress and am looking forward to what the future holds for me in this industry. I’m still devoted to pushing myself and seeking the best possible results in my work.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As a freelance photographer with two years of experience, my specialty lies in portrait and landscape photography. The pride I have in my work stems from the fact that I started my journey entirely on my own and worked diligently to overcome the challenges of relocating to a new country and restarting everything from scratch.
What sets me apart from my peers is my self-taught approach to photography. I am a passionate learner, consistently seeking out opportunities to improve and develop new skills. My commitment to refining my technique and expanding my artistic horizons has allowed me to produce unique, high-quality work that stands out in a crowded field.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I credit my family and parents’ consistent support and encouragement for a large part of my career as a photographer and business owner. They have been my staunchest supporters, encouraging me to follow my passion for photography and disseminating my images around the globe. I’d like to use this chance to express my gratitude to them for their unwavering support and faith in me. In addition to my family, I have had the good fortune to have a few outstanding mentors who have significantly influenced my photographic path. My high school yearbook teacher, Cindy Miller, gave me priceless opportunities to work on several yearbooks, design one, and take part in photographic competitions. Her advice and mentoring have been crucial in advancing my abilities and assisting me in reaching greater levels in my field. My high school teacher Tamara Haddad, who has been a consistent source of inspiration and drive since we first met, deserves special recognition. Her consistent support and encouragement have helped me advance and given me the motivation and tenacity to go for my goals and succeed as a young adult.
