Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Burch.
Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started photography a little over 6 and a half years ago and immediately jumped into shooting music/shows because of knowing artists already through being in the music industry at 16 years old and helping throw various shows around the DFW area!
Through lots of cold emailing and the power of word of mouth, I had become consistently booked every weekend in Dallas shooting shows at venues such as SILO and Stereo Live. Right around the time I hit 6 years of shooting (back in May of last year), I got reached out to by Adventure Club’s tour manager asking if I would be interested in doing their Throwback Tour – this ended up becoming the first tour I ever went on! During this time, I also started doing out of state shows with ALLEYCVT including lots of festivals like Lollapalooza and EDC Orlando!
Now, I am on her full headlining tour called the Nine Lives Tour that started in January and runs through the end of March!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth road, as going freelance full time is always a big leap of faith to take and there are bound to be hurdles along the way.
The hardest part is the financial aspect being inconsistent because some months are filled with a wide variety of work from music to commercial to portraits, but other months I could send a hundred emails and only end up with a couple gigs. What has helped me overcome this struggle is now touring because it gives me the consistency I had been searching for the last few years – I now have my weekends fully booked and just work towards gaining more commercial clients or portrait/couple work during the week while I’m in town!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in and am known for my music and portrait work – I love to use lots of bright colors to create sharp, vibrant images that really bring a photo to life rather than just capture what is happening in front of me.
I am most proud of creating my own style that is recognizable and sets my work apart from others that are in the same industry as I am! When I get hired for a shoot, I really want my clients to hire me for my style and know that that is what they want and will be receiving when they work with me.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
A huge role! A few years back, I had already been wanting to go freelance full time as I didn’t think I would be truly happy or satisfied until I worked for myself, but I didn’t feel confident in my ability to be able to sustain my life without another source of income. At the time I was doing content creation and social media for a small marketing company in Dallas and it was my favorite job I had ever had before but it still wasn’t what I wanted to be doing with my life.
Long story short, due to shortcomings of the company owner, we ended up losing our clients which in turn caused me to lose all my income. Although I was upset and stressed out at first, this ended up being the best thing that could’ve ever happened to me because it forced me to make a decision – either find another job or finally full send it and go freelance full time. I chose the freelance option and it jumpstarted me being the happiest I have ever been, getting to do what I truly love full time.
I think luck is always a contributing factor to how things go in life but I primarily believe the world gives you the same energy you put out. I make an effort to constantly be grateful for things that happen to not just me but other people, big or small and mention those things on a daily basis. Ever since I started paying more attention to the good, so much more has come to me and continues to do so both in my business and my life outside of it.
